Laurinburg is a city in and the county seat of Scotland County, North Carolina, United States. Located in southern North Carolina near the South Carolina border, Laurinburg is southwest of Fayetteville and is home to St. Andrews University. The population was 14,978 at the 2020 Census. History Settlers arrived at the present town site around 1785. The settlement was named for a prominent family, the McLaurins. The name was originally spelled Laurinburgh and pronounced as if it were spelled "Laurinboro", similar to the pronunciation of Edinburgh in Scotland, though the "h" was later dropped. The community was initially located within the jurisdiction of Richmond County. In 1840, Laurinburg had a saloon, a store, and a few shacks. Laurinburg High School, a private school, was established in 1852. The settlement prospered in the years following. Scotland County is a County (United States), county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina. Its county seat is and largest community is Laurinburg, North Carolina, Laurinburg. The county was formed in 1899 from part of Richmond County, North Carolina, Richmond County and named in honor of the Scotland, Scottish settlers who occupied the area in the 1700s. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 34,174. The area eventually comprising Scotland was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was settled by Europeans as early as the 1720s, though settling heavily increased after the American Revolutionary War. Scotland County was created out of Richmond County in 1899 largely for political reasons. Laurinburg Institute is a historic African American preparatory school in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The school was founded in 1904 by Emmanuel Monty and Tinny McDuffie at the request of Booker T. Washington. Emmanuel McDuffie was a graduate from Snow Hill Normal and Industrial Institute. Richmond County is a County (United States), county located on the central southern border of the U.S. state of North Carolina. Its county seat is Rockingham, North Carolina, Rockingham. Central School (Laurinburg, North Carolina)
The Central School, also known as Laurinburg Graded School, is a historic school building located at Laurinburg, Scotland County, North Carolina. The original section was designed by architect Oliver Duke Wheeler and built in 1909–1910. It is a two-story, brick building in Neoclassical style. The main entrance features a prominent central portico with four Doric order columns. Two-story flanking wings were added in 1939, and additions to the wings were made in 1948 and 1949 and designed by Leslie Boney. The school closed in 2000. Mag Blue House
Mag Blue House is a historic home near Laurinburg, in Scotland County, North Carolina. It was constructed in 1836 and is an early example of the Coastal Cottage form with Federal-style decorative influences. The structure is a -story, five bay by three bay, timber-frame dwelling with a hall-and-parlor floor plan. The house features a steeply pitched gable roof that extends outward to form a wide, sheltering front porch supported by simple wooden columns. Across the porch façade, the house is flush-sheathed, which was typical for the time period and region. A rear kitchen/dining wing projects from the main structure and is topped by a gabled roof. Decorative detailing is minimal but consistent with the Federal style, including finely executed corner boards, symmetrical proportions, and restrained interior millwork. The Carolina Central Railroad, was a railway company in the United States. It was incorporated in 1855 as the Wilmington and Charlotte Railroad and was renamed the Wilmington, Charlotte and Rutherford Railroad shortly after. Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church
Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church near Laurinburg, Scotland County, North Carolina. The congregation was founded in 1797, and the current meeting house was completed in early 1856. It is a two-story, gable front Greek Revival style frame building. The land on which the church stands was donated by planter and politician Duncan McFarland. The current building was constructed between 1853 and 1856 by black freedman Jackson Graham under contract. The church was used for a short period by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman as his headquarters in March 1865 prior to the Battle of Bentonville.
