Laurens is a city in Laurens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,139 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Laurens County. History Located in upstate South Carolina, the city of Laurens is named after Henry Laurens, a South Carolina merchant and rice planter who was one of America's wealthiest slave traders. He was a delegate to and second president of the Continental Congress and served as a diplomat. It is part of the Greenville– Mauldin– Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Laurens was established by an act of the General Assembly on March 15, 1785, as a location for commercial activities. It was one of the six counties created from the Old Ninety-Six District of South Carolina. Laurens was originally named Laurensville. Laurens (foaled 12 April 2015) is a French-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In a career from July 2017 to October 2019 she ran 17 times, winning eight races, including six at the highest Group One, Group 1 level. In 2017 she won a minor event on her racecourse debut and then finished second to Polydream (horse), Polydream in the Prix du Calvados before her victories in the May Hill Stakes and Fillies' Mile. In the following year she ran second to Billesdon Brook in the 1000 Guineas and then embarked on a successful campaign in her native France, taking both the Prix Saint-Alary and the Prix de Diane. Laurens is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,424 at the 2010 census. The Town of Laurens is in the southern half of the county, north of the City of Oneonta. There is also a village named Laurens, located in the town. History The town was first settled by Europeans around 1773. Joseph Mayall arrived in 1773 about one mile north of the present Laurens village. The raiding party responsible for the Cherry Valley Massacre also pillaged part of Laurens and burned some property. USS ''Laurens'' (APA-153) was a ''Haskell''-class attack transport in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. She was scrapped in 1988. Laurens is a village in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 263 at the 2010 census. The Village of Laurens is in the eastern part of the Town of Laurens. It is also north of the City of Oneonta. History Laurens is the oldest community in the town. Laurens set itself apart from the town by incorporating it as a village in 1811. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Henry Laurens. In 1860, the village had a population of 726 and contained a tannery, an iron foundry, a sawmill, and a cotton mill that was powered by water from Gilbert Lake, north of the town line in New Lisbon. A sulfur spring is located north of the village. The Southern New York Railroad route passed through Laurens, the first car reaching Laurens from Oneonta on July 4, 1901. Description Mount Laurens is located northwest of Talkeetna, Alaska, Talkeetna in Denali National Park and Preserve, Denali National Park and the Alaska Range. It is set south-southwest of Mount Foraker and southwest of Denali. Topographic relief is significant as the east face rises over in 0.75 mile (1.2 km). Fort Laurens was an American Revolutionary War fort on a northern tributary of the Muskingum River in what would become Northeast Ohio, United States. The fort's location is in the present-day town of Bolivar, Ohio, along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Overview The fort was built by General Lachlan McIntosh, in early December, 1778, on the west bank of the Tuscarawas River, now in Tuscarawas County near the town of Bolivar. It was named after Henry Laurens, a president of the Continental Congress from South Carolina. The fort was used as a reference point in defining the boundary line in Treaty of Greenville, although the text of the treaty misspells the name as "Fort Lawrence".
