Laurence Taylor (mathematician)
Laurence Taylor is a senior British police officer. On 3 June 2025 his promotion from Temporary Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police, with the portfolio of Professionalism, to substantive Assistant Commissioner, heading Specialist Operations, was announced; it is due to take effect in July 2025. Career Taylor served in Sussex Police from 1996 to July 2018, before moving to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) as a Deputy Assistant Commissioner. Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, usually just Assistant Commissioner (AC), is the third highest rank in London's Metropolitan Police, ranking below Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, Deputy Commissioner and above Deputy Assistant Commissioner. There have usually been four officers in the rank; however, at times there have been five to seven and, as of June 2025, there are six owing to the continuing secondment of Stephen Kavanagh to Interpol. Specialist Operations
The Specialist Operations directorate is a unit of the Metropolitan Police in London, England. It is responsible for providing specialist policing capabilities, including national security and counter-terrorism operations. As of May 2025, the Specialist Operations directorate is led by Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, Temporary Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans. Sussex Police
Sussex Police are the territorial police force responsible for policing in the whole of Sussex. Their jurisdiction covers the ceremonial counties of East Sussex and West Sussex. Their headquarters are in Malling House, Lewes, East Sussex. History Policing in Sussex can be traced back to Brighton Borough Police, established in 1830. A few years later on 13 March 1844, Chief Constable Henry Solomon was murdered in his office by a detainee he was interviewing. He is believed to be the only chief police officer to have suffered such a fate. Prior to 1830 local watchmen were appointed to provide some degree of law enforcement in the area. In 1812, there were some 12 watchmen who were responsible for the town. By 1814 the number had grown to 28 and at this time the title of constable was in use for them. Met Operations
Met Operations, also known as Met Ops, is one of the eight business groups which forms the Metropolitan Police Service and is responsible for providing operational support services. It was created during the 2018–19 restructuring of the service, amalgamating many of its functions from the Operations side of the Specialist Crime & Operations Directorate formed in 2012, with the Specialist Crime side of that Directorate placed under the new Frontline Policing Directorate. Frontline Policing
The Metropolitan Police of Greater London, England is organised into five main directorates, each headed by an Assistant Commissioner, and four civilian-staffed support departments previously under the umbrella of Met Headquarters, each headed by a Chief Officer, the equivalent civilian grade to Assistant Commissioner.
