Laurence McIntyre
Sir Laurence Rupert "Jim" McIntyre (22 June 191221 November 1981) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. Career McIntyre joined the Department of External Affairs in 1940. In September 1952, McIntyre was appointed Australian Commissioner for Malaya, having served as Acting Commissioner in the year before. In November 1959, McIntyre's appointment as Australian Ambassador to Japan was announced. His term in Japan was extended to take in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He was President of the United Nations Security Council in October 1973, during the 1973 Arab–Israeli War and was lauded for capably handling the situation in the role. Awards and honours In 1953, McIntyre was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire whilst he was Commissioner to Malaya in Singapore. Walter Crocker
Sir Walter Russell Crocker (25 March 190214 November 2002) was an Australian diplomat, writer and war veteran. Life and career Crocker was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales, the eldest son of Robert Crocker and Alma Bray. He served in World War II with the British Army, becoming a lieutenant colonel. He was ambassador or high commissioner to eleven countries, including India (twice), Indonesia, Canada, Italy, Belgium, Nepal, the Netherlands, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. Crocker was a Lieutenant-Governor of South Australia for more than nine years. He and his wife, Claire, had two sons, Robert and Christopher. Books Crocker authored a well-received biography of Jawaharlal Nehru titled '' Nehru: A Contemporary's Estimate'' (1966). Companions Of The Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is the only Australian order of chivalry. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement, meritorious service, or for both. At that time, Companion of the Order of Australia was the highest of three grades of the Order (Companion, Officer, Member). On 24 May 1976, the grade of Knight or Dame of the Order was established, displacing Companion as the highest grade. On 3 June 1986, the Knight/Dame grade was abolished, and Companion was once again the highest grade. On 25 March 2014, the Knight/Dame grade was re-established, Companion once again being relegated to the second highest grade of the Order. Ralph Lindsay Harry (10 March 19177 October 2002) was one of Australia's pioneer diplomats and intelligence specialists. He was recognised as a skilled diplomatic professional with a mastery of the traditional conventions and methods of diplomacy and politics. Having acted early in his career for three years as Director of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, he was also known as an insightful intelligence analyst and cryptographer. Harry was the Acting Head of the Department of External Affairs and concluded his career as Australia's Ambassador to the United Nations. Sir Allen Stanley Brown (3 July 19112 August 1999) was a senior Australian Public Servant. He was Secretary of the Prime Minister's Department between August 1949 and December 1958. Life and career Allen Brown was born on 3 July 1911. He was educated at Caulfield Grammar School, Wesley College and the University of Melbourne. In 1949, Brown served as Secretary of the Department of Post-War Reconstruction. During his time at the Department, Brown was instrumental in establishing the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
