Lauren Kate Barnes (born May 31, 1989) is an American professional women's association football, soccer player who plays as a Defender (association football), defender for Seattle Reign FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She previously played for the Philadelphia Independence in the Women's Professional Soccer, WPS and represented the United States on the United States girls' national under-15 soccer team, under-15, United States women's national under-20 soccer team, under-20, and United States women's national under-23 soccer team, under-23 national teams. As of the end of the 2024 season, she has played the NWSL records and statistics#Player records, most-ever games and minutes of any NWSL player. Seattle Reign FC is an American professional soccer team based in Seattle, Washington, that competes in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Founded in 2012, it is one of eight inaugural members of the NWSL. Since June 2024, the Reign are owned by the private equity firm the Carlyle Group and Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders FC. The team has reached the NWSL Championship three times (2014, 2015, 2023), losing each time. Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) was the top-level professional women's soccer league in the United States. It began play on March 29, 2009. The league was composed of seven teams for its first two seasons and fielded six teams for the 2011 season, with continued plans for future expansion. The WPS was the highest level in the United States soccer pyramid for the women's game. On January 30, 2012, the league announced suspension of the 2012 season, citing several internal organization struggles as the primary cause. Some of these issues included an ongoing legal battle with magicJack owner Dan Borislow and the lack of resources invested into the league. The Western New York Flash (WNY Flash) was an American women's soccer club based in Elma, New York, that most recently competed in the United Women's Soccer league in 2018.
