Laurel Turf Cup Handicap
The Japan Turf Cup Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run, held annually at Maryland's Laurel Park Racecourse. Open to horses age three and older, it is currently run on grass at a distance of one and one-half miles. Previously run as the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes, it was renamed the Japan Turf Cup Stakes in 2019. The race was a grade three race from 1985 through 2000. The Turf Cup was taken off the grass and run on the dirt of the main track on the following years; 1971, 72, 75, 76, 85, 86, 90, 96 and 1997. The race was not run between 2007-2010. It was announced by Laurel Park that the famed race would be restored in 2012 and run on October 27 at 12 furlongs and named the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes. In 2014 the race was cut back to 6 furlongs and renamed the Laurel Dash Stakes. Laurel Park Racecourse
Laurel Park, formerly Laurel Race Course, is an American thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. The track is miles in circumference. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994. In April 2024 the Maryland General Assembly approved a bill that would consolidate thoroughbred racing in Maryland to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Laurel Park is expected to host the 2026 Preakness Stakes, and then permanently close for racing once renovations at Pimlico have been completed. Robert Emmet Brennan (born 1944) is an American businessman and former accountant who built the infamous penny stock brokerage firm, First Jersey Securities. The firm specialized in promoting penny stocks to unsuspecting investors, many of them elderly, who lost their entire investments when the stocks inevitably crashed. Early life Brennan grew up in Newark, New Jersey, one of nine children. He attended Saint Leo's Roman Catholic School in Irvington, and was taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. He graduated from St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark. Career First Jersey As a result of this penny stock scheme, Brennan became a target of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mike Luzzi
Michael Jude Luzzi (born October 27, 1969, in Wilmington, Delaware) is an American jockey. He grew up near Delaware Park Racetrack where his grandfather, trainer Buddy Raines, had a major role in raising him and his brother John who also became a jockey. One of the family's great memories came in 1991 when the then eighty-year-old Raines saddled Timely Warning and watched as his grandson won the Maryland Million Classic and the Brooklyn Handicap. Luzzi began his riding career in 1988 at race tracks in Maryland and in 1989 was voted the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. He won five races in a single day at Pimlico Race Course on September 21, 1993. In 1994, he moved his tack to NY to compete on the New York Racing Association circuit. Mario G. Pino (born September 8, 1961) is a retired American jockey who competed in thoroughbred horse racing. Raised on a farm, he began his riding career in 1978 at Delaware Park in Wilmington. Over the years, he has chosen to be based at race tracks close to home and family and has won a number of riding titles at venues in the Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia areas. He rode his first winner aboard Ed's Desire on January 16, 1979, at the now-defunct Bowie Race Track in Bowie, Maryland. On July 7, 2002, Pino won seven races on a single day at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Virginia, and on October 25, 2003, had a six-win day at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland.
