Laukontori
Laukontori (or the Laukko Square, also known as ''Alaranta'') is a market square in the southern part of the city center of Tampere, Finland, on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi. It is located just a few hundred meters from Tampere Central Square. Square's beach serves as a harbor for cruise ships to the Viikinsaari island and the city of Hämeenlinna in the summer. Laukontori got its name from the first steamboat sailing on Lake Pyhäjärvi, the ''Laukko'' paddle steamer, which was built in 1859 but scrapped as early as 1864. As such, the ship was so significant that the people of Tampere began to use the name ''Laukontori'', or the square on which ''Laukko'' landed. The same berth was later used by another steamboat named ''Laukko''. ''Alaranta'' and ''Alasatama'' have been used as parallel names for Laukontori, although on the other hand the port of the Mustalahti bay on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi has never been called ''Yläranta'' or ''Yläsatama''. Viikinsaari
Viikinsaari is an island located in the lake Pyhäjärvi belonging to the City of Tampere, Finland. The island is a popular nature resort and an outdoor recreation area, attracting visitors all year round. In the summertime there is a boat connection to the island from the Laukontori harbour. In winter, the island can be reached by walking or skiing. The western part is a nature reserve, but there are also swimming shores, playgrounds, a small chapel, a fireplace for roasting sausages, a restaurant, a footpath through the nature reserve and a dance pavilion on the island. Viikinsaari is administrated by the Tampere Culture Affairs, which organises happenings and events throughout summer for people in all ages, for example nature tours for children, dance lessons and events and music nights. Tammelantori
Tammelantori is a market square in the Tammela district in the center of Tampere in Pirkanmaa, Finland. It is one of Tampere's most significant marketplaces, which is very popular, especially during the summer. The market is very famous for its cafes and '' mustamakkara'' kiosks. History As late as the late 19th century, the market place was the city's rental field. However, the town plan for Tammela, which includes the current Tammelantori, was drawn up as early as 1887, and the market was opened on July 7, 1900. At the time, little was for sale: sheet metal, wood, porcelain, glass, footwear, fabrics, clothing, animal feed, hay and straw. Many families in Tammela bought almost everything they needed from Tammelantori. Sori Square
The Sori Square () is a square located in the center of Tampere, Finland, in the southern part of the Kyttälä district. It is located in the area bounded by the Hatanpää Highway, Suvantokatu, Tuomiokirkonkatu and Vuolteenkatu. At the eastern end of the square is the Tampere Orthodox Church from 1898. There is a terminus at Tampere Tram Line 1 on the west side. The square was built in the 1980s, and its artistic composition was by sculptor Harry Kivijärvi. In the square is his 10-meter sculpture called ''Pirkka''. Kivijärvi has also designed the area's lamps, benches and trash bins, as well as a mosaic-decorated water basin in the northern corner of the square. The work was completed in the autumn of 1987. The name of Sori Square was marked in the town plan in 1985. Ratina (district)
Ratina is a district in the center of Tampere, Finland, on the east side of Tammerkoski. The Ratina Stadium, Tampere Bus Station and Tampere's largest shopping mall, the Ratina (shopping centre), Ratina shopping centre, are located in the district, among others. To the north of Ratina is also the Koskikeskus (shopping centre), Koskikeskus shopping centre. The district consists of a peninsula called Ratinanniemi, which is surrounded on three sides by Ratinansuvanto and Viinikanlahti. Nalkala
Nalkala is a neighbourhood in the city of Tampere, Finland, covering the southern part of the city center from Hämeenkatu to the Laukontori market square. The district is bordered by the lower reaches of Tammerkoski, the Ratina estuary, Lake Pyhäjärvi and to the west by Hämeenpuisto. The original 19th-century street names in the area still include Hämeenkatu, Hallituskatu and Kuninkaankatu, the latter been named after the founder of the city of Tampere, King Gustav III of Sweden. ''Aamulehti'' ( Finnish for "morning newspaper") is a Finnish-language daily newspaper published in Tampere, Finland. Established in 1881 by Finnish patriots in Tampere, the newspaper aimed to bolster the Finnish language and people's identity during Russia's reign over Finland. Tammerkoski
Tammerkoski is a channel of rapids in Tampere, Finland. The city of Tampere is located between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi (Tampere region), Pyhäjärvi. The difference in altitude between these two is and the water flows from Näsijärvi to Pyhäjärvi through the Tammerkoski rapids. The banks of the Tammerkoski are among the oldest industrial areas in Finland and were the site of a busy marketplace in the 17th century. Tampere was founded on the banks of the rapids, as the rushing water provided a great deal of power for the needs of industry. Four power stations and three dams are located on the Tammerkoski.
