Laughlin, NV
Laughlin () is an unincorporated community in Clark County, Nevada, United States. Laughlin lies south of Las Vegas, in the far southern tip of Nevada. As a resort town, it is known for its gaming and water recreation. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,658. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Laughlin as a census-designated place (CDP). It is located on the Colorado River, downstream from the Davis Dam and Lake Mohave, and directly across from the much larger Bullhead City, Arizona. The nearby communities of Bullhead City, Arizona; Needles, California; Fort Mohave, Arizona; and Mohave Valley, Arizona, bring the area's total population to about 100,000. Laughlin is also northeast of Los Angeles. Laughlin was named for Don Laughlin, an Owatonna, Minnesota native, who purchased the southern tip of Nevada in 1964 (informally called South Pointe). Unincorporated Towns In Nevada
Nevada state law allows for governance of unincorporated area, unincorporated towns under two different systems. The Unincorporated Town Government Law, adopted in 1975, applies to counties of 100,000 people or more, and any other county that opts in. For other counties, a patchwork system of laws applies. A 1975 study by the state Legislative Commission identified 39 unincorporated towns in Nevada. As of 2014, the state Demographer's Office listed 44 unincorporated towns. Davis Dam
Davis Dam is a dam on the Colorado River about downstream from Hoover Dam. It stretches across the border between Arizona and Nevada. Originally called Bullhead Dam, Davis Dam was renamed after Arthur Powell Davis, who was the director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1914 to 1923. The United States Bureau of Reclamation owns and operates the dam, which was completed in 1951. Davis Dam impounds the Colorado River and forms Lake Mohave. Emerald River (unfinished Project)
Emerald River is an unfinished resort project in Laughlin, Nevada. It was proposed by developer John Midby in 1988, and would have included four hotel-casino properties, as well as other features such as a shopping mall. The total project would cost $800 million, and would cover . Emerald River was to be built in phases over a 10-year period, but financial problems put a halt to construction in 1990, before completion of the first phase. Two towers, rising 7 and 14 stories, have been left unfinished since then. An 18-hole golf course was the only feature to reach completion, operating from 1990 to 2005. Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino is a hotel and casino on the banks of the Colorado River in Laughlin, Nevada. History Don Laughlin bought the southern tip of Nevada in 1954 (informally called South Pointe). Laughlin operated the 101 Club in Las Vegas. He opened the Riverside Resort on August 2, 1966. It offered all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents, twelve slot machines and two live gambling tables, and eight motel rooms, four of which were occupied by Don Laughlin's family. Laughlin wanted to call the community "Riverside" or "Casino" but the Post Office opted for Laughlin. In 1972, Don Laughlin expanded by building a west wing that added 48 rooms, and in 1975, a 52-room east wing was built. Construction of a 14-story hotel/casino tower in 1983 added 253 rooms and in 1986, a second fourteen-floor tower added 307 more rooms and an automotive museum. Fort Mohave is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. It is named for a nearby fort that was used during the Mohave War. As of the 2020 census, the population of Fort Mohave was 16,190, up from 14,364 in 2010 and 8,919 in 2000. It is a suburb of Bullhead City.
