Laugh It Off (1939 Film)
''Laugh It Off'' is a 1939 American musical film directed by Albert S. Rogell and starring Johnny Downs, Constance Moore, Marjorie Rambeau and Cecil Cunningham. It was shot at Universal City in Hollywood. The film's sets were designed by the art director Jack Otterson. Plot Four veteran actresses are turned out of an retirement home for entertainers when the Spencer Trust that owns it goes bust. One of them gets her lawyer nephew to seek out the only remaining member of the Spencer family, a young woman named Ruth, who proves sympathetic but has no money to help. They next turn to the idea of reopening a failed gambling club as a popular nightclub in which they will all appear and sing. However this threatens to embarrass their respectable relations who try and prevent it. Janet Beecher (born Janet Meysenberg; October 21, 1884 – August 6, 1955) was an American stage and screen actress. Early years The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Von Meysenburg, Beecher was born in Jefferson City, Missouri. Her sister was actress Olive Wyndham. The sisters were related to Harriet Beecher Stowe on their mother's side. Her father's work as a vice-consul for Germany led to her growing up in Chicago. Career Beecher was a supporting player and lead on the Broadway stage between the 1900s and 1940s. Brooks Benedict (born Harold J. Mann, February 6, 1896 – January 1, 1968) was an American actor of the silent and sound film eras, when he played supporting and utility roles in over 300 films, mostly uncredited. Life He was born to Alice Julian and Samuel Mann. He attended Princeton University for two years, and was a member of its football team. He then joined the American Ambulance Corps in France for six months at the height of the First World War. Upon return and after the Selective Service Act of 1917, he enlisted and served as a private in the U.S. Army Air Service (632 Aero Sq., 144 Aero Sq., Sq. I Kelly Field, Sq. Jack Norton (born Mortimer John Naughton; September 2, 1882 – October 15, 1958) was an American stage and film character actor who appeared in more than 180 films between 1934 and 1948, often playing drunks, although in real life he was a teetotaler. Lillian West (March 15, 1886 – April 23, 1970) was an American film actress. She appeared in more than 100 films between 1916 and 1958. Biography Mildred West was born in New York, New York. She was raised by relatives in Hoboken, New Jersey, after her mother fell ill. Claire Whitney (May 6, 1890 – August 27, 1969) was an American stage and film actress who appeared in 111 films between 1912 and 1949. Only 21 of these films survive, as most have been lost. Early life She was the daughter of Fred Stone, a stage actor, dancing comedian, and owner of the Fred Stone theatrical stock company.
