Latvian Basketball Cup
Latvian Basketball Cup ( Latvian: Latvijas kauss basketbolā), for sponsorship reasons known as Latvijas Basketbola Užavas kauss, is an annual national domestic basketball cup competition in Latvia. It is organised by the Latvian Basketball Association. After 26 years long absence, it was restored in 2020. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic the first season was cancelled. In the season 2021-22 the cup was finally played, and BK VEF Rīga won it for the first time. History Latvian Basketball Cup was first organized since 1948 to 1952 and since 1960 to 1994. After former Latvia NT player Kristaps Janičenoks became the director of Latvian Basketball League, he restored the competition in 2020. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic the first season was cancelled after the first games. In the 2021-22 season Užavas Beer production became the title sponsor of the tournament. VEF Rīga is a Latvian professional basketball team that is based in Riga, Latvia. VEF Rīga is a nine-time Latvian Basketball League champion. History Early years The club name VEF came from the radio manufacturing company VEF which created the basketball club in 1958. VEF Rīga has been home to some of the best Latvian players for more than five decades. Citi Zēni (; ) is a Latvian pop band, consisting of six members. They represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with their single “Eat Your Salad”. Liepāja (; liv, Līepõ; see other names) is a state city in western Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea. BK Liepāja is a professional basketball club in Liepāja, Latvia playing in the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League and Latvian Basketball League. History Basketball team in the city of Liepāja was first founded in 1991, just after Latvia regained independence from Soviet Union. During the years team changed names, according to sponsorships.
