''Lathyrus cicera'' is a species of wild pea known by the common names red pea, red vetchling and flatpod peavine. It is native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and it is known from other places as an introduced species. This is a hairless annual herb producing a slightly winged stem. The leaves are each made up of two leaflike linear leaflets long. They also bear branched, curling tendrils. The inflorescence holds a single pea flower wide which is a varying shade of red. Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), also known after ennoblement in 1761 as Carl von Linné,#Blunt, Blunt (2004), p. 171. was a Swedish biologist and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. Lathyrism is a condition caused by eating certain legumes of the genus ''Lathyrus''. There are three types of lathyrism: ''neurolathyrism'', ''osteolathyrism'', and ''angiolathyrism'', all of which are incurable, differing in their symptoms and in the body tissues affected. Neurolathyrism is the type associated with the consumption of legumes in the genus ''Lathyrus'' that contain the toxin oxalyldiaminopropionic acid (ODAP). Bonvesin da la Riva (; sometimes Italianized in spelling Bonvesino or Buonvicino; ) was an Italian Medieval writer and poet. Bonvesin was a notable Lombard poet and writer, giving one of the first known examples of the written Lombard language. He is often described as the "father" of the Lombard language.
