Las Palmas (, ; ), officially Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is a Spanish city and capital of Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands (jointly with Santa Cruz de Tenerife) and its most populous municipality. It also is the ninth-largest municipality in Spain with a population of 381,223 in 2020. It is also the fifth-most populous urban area in Spain and (depending on sources) ninth or tenth most populous metropolitan area in Spain. Las Palmas is located in the northeastern part of the island of Gran Canaria, about west of the African coast in the Atlantic Ocean.
