Larry Whigham
Larry Jerome Whigham (born June 23, 1972) is an American former professional football player who was a safety for nine seasons with the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). Whigham played college football for the Louisiana–Monroe Warhawks and was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 1994 NFL draft. He was known for his enthusiasm on the field and excelled in special teams play. He made the Pro Bowl twice as a special teams player, once with New England and once with Chicago. In January 1997 he earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in the AFC Championship Game against Jacksonville when he tackled Jaguar punter Bryan Barker on his own four-yard line, which resulted in a touchdown for the Patriots a few plays later. Safety (S), historically known as a safetyman, is a position in gridiron football on the American football positions#Defense, defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety (FS) and the strong safety (SS). Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. The 1996 NFL season was the 77th regular season of the National Football League (NFL) and the season was marked by notable controversies from beginning to end. The 1995 NFL season was the 76th regular season of the National Football League (NFL). The league expanded to 30 teams with the addition of the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The two expansion teams were slotted into the two remaining divisions that previously had only four teams (while the other four had five teams): the AFC Central (Jaguars) and the NFC West (Panthers). Meanwhile, the two teams in Los Angeles relocated to other cities: the Rams transferred to St. Louis and the Raiders moved back to Oakland; this would be the start of a 20-year absence for the NFL in Los Angeles. 1994 New England Patriots Season
The 1994 New England Patriots season was the team's 35th season, and 25th in the National Football League (NFL). It was the first under owner Robert Kraft, who purchased the team after preventing previous owner James Orthwein from moving the Patriots to St. Louis. The Patriots finished the season with a record of ten wins and six losses, and finished tied for first in the AFC's East division. The Patriots began the 1994 season with a 3–6 record before winning their final seven games, finishing 10–6 and qualifying the playoffs (their first winning season in 6 years). The Patriots were just two seasons removed from a 2-win season, and made the playoffs for the first time since 1986 and only the seventh time in the team's history. To honor the NFL's 75th season, a special anniversary logo was designed, and each player wore a patch on their jerseys with this logo throughout the season.
