Larry Hurren
Lawrence James Hurren (1 May 1955 – 30 July 1996) was a Canadian outlaw biker and one of the Port Hope 8. Satan's Choice An young man from Oshawa who worked at various times as an automobile worker or a cabbie, Hurren was a close friend of Lorne Edgar Campbell with he had boarded with as a teenager. Campbell had sponsored Hurren into the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club. Hurren fought as an amateur boxer with Campbell as his manager. Despite their friendship, Campbell once nearly shot Hurren he attempted to break into the Oshawa clubhouse after he lost his key. In June 1978, Hurren along with his fellow Satan's Choice bikers Gary Comeau, Jeff McLeod, and Gordon van Haarlem were charged with a brawl at the Alderville Indian Reserve when they gate-clashed a party at the reserve, which led to a number of fights. Port Hope 8 Case
The Port Hope 8 case refers to the trial of eight members of the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club in 1979 for the murder of William John Matiyek on 18 October 1978 at the Queen's Hotel in Port Hope, Ontario. Of the accused, six were convicted, and the case is widely considered to be a miscarriage of justice. Of the "Port Hope 8", Gary Comeau and Richard Sauvé were convicted of first degree murder; Jeff McLeod, David Hoffman, Merv Blaker and Larry Hurren were convicted of second degree murder; and Armand Sanguigni and Gordon van Haarlem were acquitted. Background The largest motorcycle gang in Ontario in the 1960s-1970s were the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club founded in 1965. Millhaven Institution
Millhaven Institution (french: Établissement de Millhaven) is a maximum security prison located in Bath, Ontario. Approximately 500 inmates are incarcerated at Millhaven. Opened in 1971, Millhaven was originally built to replace Ontario's other aging maximum security prison, Kingston Penitentiary in Kingston Ontario. A riot at Kingston Penitentiary forced Millhaven to open prematurely. During the period of 1977–1984, a Special Handling Unit (SHU) operated at Millhaven, alongside its general maximum-security population. A new Canada-wide Special Handling Unit was subsequently opened in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines Quebec, and the Millhaven SHU was closed. Millhaven also housed the federal inmate intake and assessment unit for the Ontario region, the Millhaven Assessment Unit (MAU), until 2013, when the assessment unit was moved to Joyceville High Medium Institute (JAU), in order to facilitate the closing of Kingston Penitentiary. Innocence Canada (formerly known as the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted, AIDWYC), is a Canadian, non-profit legal organization. Based in Toronto, Innocence Canada identifies, advocates for, and helps exonerate individuals who have been convicted of a serious crime which they did not commit and to preventing future wrongful convictions through education and justice system reform. Collins Bay Institution
Collins Bay Institution (french: Établissement de Collins Bay) is a multilevel correctional facility in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and falls under the supervision of Correctional Services of Canada. The facility was opened in 1930, and is now the oldest operational federal penitentiary in Ontario. The main prison is medium security, with a minimum security facility (formerly Frontenac Institution) residing on the same property. A 96-bed maximum security unit is also operational. History Collins Bay Institution was opened in 1930 under the name "Preferred Class Penitentiary (Ontario)" to accommodate the growing number of inmates in the Ontario region. Inmates from Kingston Penitentiary, only 2 km away, assisted in the construction of the new prison. Bernie Guindon
Bernard Diedonne Guindon (born 19 November 1942), better known as "Bernie the Frog", is a Canadian former outlaw biker, gangster and boxer, best known as the founder and national president of Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club from 1965 to 2000. He was later a member of the Hells Angels until his retirement in 2006. Rise to power Guindon was born in Hull, Quebec (modern Gatineau) to French-Canadian parents. His mother, Lucy, was an illiterate woman from rural Quebec who dropped out of school in Grade 1 while his father, Lucienne, was a petty criminal from Buckingham who worked as a bootlegger. The Guindon family were itinerant in his early years, living at various locations in Quebec and northern Ontario. In Ontario at the time, bars and liquor stores closed very early, and Lucienne Guindon, who ended settling up in Oshawa, sold alcohol out of his house to those who wanted to drink past the closing time, charging double the price in the liquor stores. David George Hoffman
David George Hoffman (born 3 March 1948) is a Canadian man wrongly convicted of murder, for which he served four years in prison for before he was acquitted on an appeal. Satan's Choice Hoffman was born on a farm between New Dundee and Plattsville. Unlike most outlaw bikers, Hoffman was a successful student who graduated with honors from the Waterloo Oxford Secondary School in 1966. In the spring of 1967, he joined the Preston (modern Cambridge) chapter of the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club. Shortly afterwards, he began to work at the B.F. Goodrich Company factory in Kitchener. Unlike most members of Satan's Choice, Hoffman held a legitimate job and worked for a living. Hoffmann transferred over to the Kitchener chapter of Satan's Choice and served as the treasurer from October 1967 onward. Lorne Edgar Campbell
Lorne Edgar Campbell (born 2 September 1948) is a Canadian former outlaw biker and gangster. One of the earliest members of the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club, which he joined in 1965, Campbell remained a life-long member of the club, staying on until Satan's Choice joined the Hells Angels in 2000. Campbell served as the president of Satan's Choice Oshawa chapter from 1985 to 1997, and of the Hells Angels' Sudbury chapter from 2001 to 2006, amassing a number of convictions. Campbell is one of the leading figures associated with the highly controversial "Port Hope 8" case, where he testified that he killed William "Heavy" Matiyek on the night of 18 October 1978 in Port Hope, a crime that six other men were convicted of.
