La Porta
La Porta (, ; co, A Porta d'Ampugnani) is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. La Porta is situated in the heart of the ''Castagniccia'', of which this is the largest settlement. It formed the gateway (''porta'') to the ancient ''pieve'' of Ampugnani. Geography Part of the canton of the Fiumalto d'Ampugnani, La Porta on its spur of Monte San Petrone is sheltered among the chestnut woodlands on the slopes. This most remote and isolated area of north-western Corsica retains the last extensive stands of the old-growth chestnut forest that gave its name to the Castagniccia region (''castagna'', "chestnut"); the depopulation it has experienced since ca 1870, to 196 persons in 1999, have had the effect of preserving the traditional landscape. Tina La Porta is a Miami-based digital artist who "focuses on issues surrounding identity in the virtual space". She was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1967. Her early work could be characterized as net:art or internet art. In 2001 she collaborated with Sharon Lehner on ''My Womb the Mosh Pit'', an artistic representation of Peggy Phelan's ''Unmarked''. John Daniel LaPorta (April 13, 1920 – May 12, 2004) was a jazz clarinetist and composer. Early life and education A native of Philadelphia, LaPorta started playing clarinet at the age of nine and studied at the Mastbaum School in Philadelphia, where one of his classmates was Buddy DeFranco. As a teenager he played in Philadelphia bands with Charlie Ventura and Bill Harris. He studied classically with Joseph Gigliotti of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Leon Russianoff at the Manhattan School of Music. Career From 1942 to 1944, he was a member of the Bob Chester big band, then spent the next two years with the Woody Herman Orchestra. Beginning in 1947, he studied with Lennie Tristano. Isidro de Laporta (sometimes La Porta or Porta) (1750–1808) was a Spanish composer and guitarist, active in Madrid during the first years of the 19th century. Much of Laporta's compositional output is for his own instrument or for ''salterio'', although he also wrote for violin and keyboard. In his day he appears to have been regarded as a major producer of works for guitar. He also composed for the stage, and it was said that his dance music was especially appealing.
