LankaeNews.com is a Sri Lankan online News website that provides news and feature articles on current affairs in Sri Lanka. It is known and has been targeted for its independent reporting. Attacks and threats LankaeNews.com was banned for several years under the Government of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Its office was set on fire in an arson attack in 2011 and its Editor Bennett Rupasinghe told BBC that he suspected the government’s hand in the crime as LankaeNews had written several articles critical of the Sri Lankan government. Later Bennett Rupasinghe was arrested. Earlier its previous editor, Sandaruwan Senadheera had to flee Sri Lanka after threats. It came under international limelight in 2010 when its correspondent Prageeth Eknaligoda disappeared while he was investigating the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Sri Lankan Army against Tamil rebels. Maithripala Sirisena
Maithripala Yapa Sirisena (; ; born 3 September 1951) is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the seventh president of Sri Lanka from 9 January 2015 to 18 November 2019. Sirisena is Sri Lanka's first president from the North Central Province, Sri Lanka, North Central Province of the country and does not belong to the traditional Sri Lankan political elite. He entered as a member of parliament from Polonnaruwa back in 2020 and ended his tenure in 2024. Sirisena joined mainstream politics in 1989 as a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and has held several ministries since 1994. Prageeth Eknaligoda
Prageeth Ekneligoda (born April 9, 1960) is a Sri Lankan Cartoonist, Political analyst and Journalist. He was reported missing on January 24, 2010, two days before the Presidential polls in Sri Lanka when the country was under the Presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa and has not been seen since.Bangkok Post, February 25, 2010. p.5 He actively participated in the presidential campaign of common opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka while working as a freelance journalist for a pro-opposition website Lankaenews.com. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is an American 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City, with correspondents around the world. The Free Media Movement (FMM) is a media freedom watchdog organization of journalists from Sri Lanka. It evolved out of the standing committee of journalists, which was formed in late 1991.
