Langenes Municipality
Langenes is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality, which existed from 1919 until 1964, encompassed the western shore of the Gavlfjorden in what is now Øksnes Municipality. It is located on the northern end of the large island of Langøya in the Vesterålen archipelago. The administrative centre was in the village of Stø, just east of the Langenes Church in the northern part of the municipality. General information The municipality of Langenes was established on 1 July 1919 when the northeastern part of Øksnes Municipality was split off from Øksnes to form the new municipality. Initially, Langenes had a population of 1,085. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. Stø
Stø is a fishing village in Øksnes Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located on the northern tip of the island of Langøya, along the Gavlfjorden in the Vesterålen archipelago. In 2001, there were about 175 residents. This village was the administrative centre of the old Langenes Municipality which existed from 1919 until 1964. Tourism There are two places serving food in Stø. Some of the specialities at these restaurants are whale meat, cod tongues, boknafisk, Arctic char, and soup with salmon and catfish. Alsvåg Church
Alsvåg Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Øksnes Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Alsvåg on the island of Langøya. It is one of the churches for the Øksnes parish which is part of the Vesterålen prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1923 using plans drawn up by the architect R. Randulf. The church seats about 300 people. History The building was originally constructed in 1923 as an annex chapel. In 1949, the building was upgraded and renovated to gain parish church status. It was consecrated that same year.
