Lane W. Martin
Lane Wyatt Martin is an American Materials science, materials scientist and Engineering, engineer specializing in complex oxide thin films, their physics and properties, and applications of the same. He is best known for his work on Ferroelectricity, ferroelectric and Multiferroics, multiferroic thin films. Currently he is a Robert A. Welch Professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering, Chemistry, and Physics and Astronomy, and serves as the Director of the Rice Advanced Materials Institute (RAMI) at Rice University. Early life and education Martin was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and grew up primarily in Indiana, Pennsylvania and graduated from Indiana Area School District, Indiana Area Senior High School. Epitaxy refers to a type of crystal growth or material deposition in which new crystalline layers are formed with one or more well-defined orientations with respect to the crystalline seed layer. The deposited crystalline film is called an epitaxial film or epitaxial layer. Pyroelectricity
Pyroelectricity (from the two Greek words ''pyr'' meaning fire, and electricity) is a property of certain crystals which are naturally electrically polarized and as a result contain large electric fields. Pyroelectricity can be described as the ability of certain materials to generate a temporary voltage when they are heated or cooled. The change in temperature modifies the positions of the atoms slightly within the crystal structure, such that the polarization of the material changes. This polarization change gives rise to a voltage across the crystal. If the temperature stays constant at its new value, the pyroelectric voltage gradually disappears due to leakage current. In electromagnetism, a dielectric (or dielectric medium) is an electrical insulator that can be polarised by an applied electric field. When a dielectric material is placed in an electric field, electric charges do not flow through the material as they do in an electrical conductor, because they have no loosely bound, or free, electrons that may drift through the material, but instead they shift, only slightly, from their average equilibrium positions, causing dielectric polarisation. Robert Alonzo Welch
Robert Alonzo Welch (1872-1952) was a Texan investor who became very successful in the oil, sulfur, banking, and real estate industries in the Houston area. Originally from South Carolina, he moved to Houston at the age of fourteen. He worked for the Bute Paint Company as bookkeeper starting in 1891 and rose through the ranks to be secretary-treasurer. He resigned from this post in 1927, but remained on the company's board of directors. In the early 1900s, Welch started investing in oil fields that was the start of his fortune.
