Landing Zone Baldy (also known as FSB Baldy or Hill 63) was a United States Marine Corps, United States Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base located northwest of Chu Lai, Quảng Nam Province in central Vietnam. History The base was located at the intersection of National Route 1 (Vietnam), Highway 1 and Route 535, approximately 28 km northwest of Chu Lai. Baldy was originally established by the U.S. Army 196th Infantry Brigade (United States), 196th Light Infantry Brigade and was then taken over as the headquarters for the 7th Marine Regiment (United States), 7th Marines. On the morning of 3 January 1968 the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 2nd Division (Vietnam), 2nd Division mortared Baldy as part of a series of attacks on four Marines bases. The 196th Infantry Brigade ("Chargers"), also known as the Charger Brigade was first formed on 24 June 1921 as part of the United States Army Reserve's 98th Division with the responsibility of training soldiers. World War II During World War II, the 98th initially defended Kauai, Hawaii and Maui, Hawaii, and finally responsible for defending Oahu, Hawaii later in the war. The Bell AH-1 Cobra is a single-engined attack helicopter developed and manufactured by the American rotorcraft manufacturer Bell Helicopter.
