Land Rover Aqaba Assembly Plant
The Land Rover Aqaba Assembly Plant Co., Ltd. was a joint venture between the Land Rover brand, the Shahin Group and Ole Automotive. It was founded on 18 February 2001, and is located in the Ma'an Governorate close to the Aqaba Special Economic Zone in Jordan. There was a capital of 70 million dinar injected to build this plant. About 1,000 workers are employed there, assembling 5,000 units annually. The first products assembled at the plant were the Defender and Discovery 2. The components for the vehicles were obtained in kits sent from the Solihull plant in the United Kingdom. Ma'an Governorate
Ma'an () is one of the governorates of Jordan. It is located south of Amman, Jordan's capital. Its capital is the city of Ma'an. This governorate is the largest in the kingdom of Jordan by area. The dinar is divided into 100 qirsh (also called piastres) or 1000 fils (currency), fulus. Solihull plant is a car manufacturing factory in Lode Lane, Lode Heath, Solihull, UK, owned by Jaguar Land Rover. The plant sits on a site and employs over 9,000 people in manufacturing. Shadow factory: 1936–1945 Originally two farms, Wharhall and Fordrove, were purchased in 1936 by the British Government on which to build a shadow factory in preparation for any potential war with Nazi Germany. Construction was started almost immediately, with the factory complete as a shell and placed in mothballs in late 1938.
