Lanao (province)
Lanao was a province of the Philippines from 1914 to 1959. Today, the province comprises Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur. Etymology The term "Lanao" is derived from a Maranao word "Ranao" meaning a body of water. "Meranau" means lake dweller. They are the natives of the place occupying the land around Lake Lanao, which is situated at the central part of Lanao del Sur. Lanao, applies to the entire area before its division. When it was divided into two provinces, the southern portion became Lanao del Sur and the northern part became Lanao del Norte. History Dansalan, Marawi's old name, was explored by the Spaniards as early as 1639. It is said that at that time, Marawi was already the citadel of Malayan-Arabic culture in Mindanao. Sulu (), officially the Province of Sulu (Tausug language, Tausūg: ''Wilaya' sin Lupa' Sūg''; ), is a Provinces of the Philippines, province of the Philippines in the Sulu Archipelago. Kolambugan, officially the Municipality of Kolambugan (; ; ), is a municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 28,265 people. Etymology The name “Kolambugan” was taken from the word “''kolambog''”, a kind of tree which grew abundantly in the area. Kauswagan, officially the Municipality of Kauswagan (Maranao: ''Inged a Kauswagan'', , ), is a municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 24,193 people. Kapatagan, officially the Municipality of Kapatagan (Maranao: ''Inged a Kapatagan''; ; ), is a municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. Baroy, officially the Municipality of Baroy (Maranao: ''Inged a Baroy''; ; ), is a municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 24,683 people. History As early as 1918, Baroy was originally called Baloy, a plant commonly found in the community that is used for mat weaving. Later on, the said plant became extinct and the inhabitants of the locality decided to change the name to Baroy.
