Lamesa
Lamesa ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Dawson County, Texas, United States. Its population was 8,674 at the 2020 census, down from 9,952 at the 2000 census. Located south of Lubbock on the Llano Estacado, Lamesa was founded in 1903. Most of its economy is based on cotton farming. The Preston E. Smith prison unit, named for the former governor of Texas, is located just outside Lamesa. Geography Lamesa is located in the center of Dawson County at (32.734439, –101.958190). U.S. Highway 87 (Lynn Avenue) passes through the eastern side of the city, leading north to Lubbock and southeast to Big Spring. U.S. Highway 180 passes through the center of town as 4th Street and leads west to Seminole and east to Snyder. Texas State Highway 349
State Highway 349 (SH 349) is a state highway in the western part of Texas, United States. History The original formation of the highway on August 3, 1943, included only the section from Rankin to Midland, replacing FM 9. On April 30, 1947, FM 306 and FM 177 were redesignated to form the segment of SH 349 from Midland to near Lamesa. The section from Sheffield to Rankin was added on October 24, 1956, by redesignating part of SH 51. The part of SH 349 south of Sheffield was Farm to Market Road 1217, which was designated on July 14, 1949, from Dryden northward . FM 1217 was extended to the northeast on May 23, 1951, on December 18, 1951, on December 17, 1952, and on April 24, 1954. The designation was extended on September 29, 1954, to the end of FM 1749, which was cancelled and combined with FM 1217, adding and bringing its southern terminus to Sheffield. Dawson County, Texas
Dawson County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 12,456. The county seat is Lamesa. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1905. It is named for Nicholas Mosby Dawson, a soldier of the Texas Revolution. Dawson County comprises the Lamesa, Texas micropolitan statistical area (μSA), and by population is the smallest μSA in the United States. History A Dawson County was founded in 1856 from Kinney County, Maverick County, and Uvalde County, but was divided in 1866 between Kinney and Uvalde Counties. State Highway 137 (SH 137) is a state highway in west Texas. It runs from SH 163 near Ozona to U.S. Highway 385 (US 385) near Brownfield. SH 137 was originally established in 1928, and it has been realigned several times since then. History SH 137 was designated on November 19, 1928 from Odessa to the Andrews–Gaines county line. On June 25, 1929, it was extended to McCamey. On March 19, 1930, a portion from Lubbock to Brownfield, which was designated as part of SH 53, was renumbered as a separate section of SH 137, creating a gap. Preston Smith (governor)
Preston Earnest Smith (March 8, 1912 – October 18, 2003) was an American entrepreneur and politician who served as the 40th governor of Texas from 1969 to 1973. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 35th lieutenant governor from 1963 to 1969. Early life Smith was born into a tenant farming family of 13 children in Corn Hill, a town in Williamson County, Texas, that has since been absorbed into nearby Jarrell. The family later moved to Lamesa, Texas, where Smith graduated in 1928 from Lamesa High School. In 1934, he graduated from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) in Lubbock with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Staying in Lubbock, he founded a movie theater business and invested in real estate. Seminole, Texas
Seminole is a city in and the county seat of Gaines County, Texas, United States. Its population was 6,430 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. Seminole and Gaines County are home to a large population of Russian Mennonites, Low German Mennonites from Russia that came to West Texas in the 1980s. Brownfield, Texas
Brownfield is a city in and the county seat of Terry County, Texas, United States. Its population was 8,936 at the 2020 census. Brownfield is southwest of Lubbock. History In 1903, town promoters W. G. Hardin and A. F. Small purchased the county's central lot, platted the site, and named the town after the Brownfield ranching family. To boost chances of becoming the county seat, they granted a lot to every county voter. The town's early years saw the construction of essential structures, including the courthouse, school, and churches. Hill's Hotel became the first business, housing the inaugural post office.
