Lament Over The Dead Christ (Previtali)
''Lament over the Dead Christ'' is a 1524 or 1525 oil on canvas painting by Andrea Previtali, produced for the church of Sant’Andrea, Bergamo, where it still hangs. One of the artist's last works, it was painted after his return to his birthplace of Bergamo, a phase during which he was heavily influenced by Albrecht Dürer, Albrecht Altdorfer and other German art, as also seen in ''The Crossing of the Red Sea'' and ''Crucifixion''. It is considered one of his most intense paintings. Sant'Alessandro In Colonna
Sant'Alessandro in Colonna is a Baroque style, Roman Catholic church located on Via Sant'Alessandro in Bergamo, region of Lombardy, Italy. History and Description A church at the site dates to paleo-Christian times, however after a collapse of the structure in 1447, the church was rebuilt followed by restorations between the late 17th and 18th centuries. Outside stands an ancient Roman Column, recomposed in 1618, where traditionally St Alexander was martyred. The nave has four chapels on each side. In the sacristy is a ''Grief over a dead Christ'' by the school of Lorenzo Lotto, a ''Virgin in adoration of the Christ Child'' (1512) by Alessandro Bonvicino called il Moretto, and a "Madonna dello scoiattolo" by Giacomo Gavazzi. San Michele Al Pozzo Bianco
San Michele al Pozzo Bianco is a church in the upper town of Bergamo, on a small piazza of the same name, near Porta Sant'Agostino, on Via Porta Dipinta. The church is now in a corner next to the frescoed house of the vicar, entered by a large rounded arch. The vicar's house has an external fresco attributed to Giacomo Scanardi. History Founded in the 8th century, it was rebuilt many times over the centuries. The present facade is from the early 20th century. Much of the interior was rebuilt in the 15th century, and covered with frescoes in a style influenced by Byzantine iconography. Art The chapel to the left, completed later, has a series of frescoed panels ''Scenes from the Life of The Virgin Mary'' (1525), masterworks by Lorenzo Lotto. Lorenzo Lotto
Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480 – 1556/57) was an Italian painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, traditionally placed in the Venetian school, though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits. He was active during the High Renaissance and the first half of the Mannerist period, but his work maintained a generally similar High Renaissance style throughout his career, although his nervous and eccentric posings and distortions represented a transitional stage to the Florentine and Roman Mannerists. Overview During his lifetime Lotto was a well-respected painter and certainly popular in Northern Italy; he is traditionally included in the Venetian School, but his independent career actually places him outside the Venetian art scene. Andrea Previtali
Andrea Previtali (c. 1480 –1528) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period, active mainly in Bergamo. He was also called Andrea Cordelliaghi. Biography Previtali was a pupil of the painter Giovanni Bellini. In Bergamo, he painted a ''John the Baptist preaching with other saints'' (1515) for the church of Santo Spirito, a ''San Benedetto and other saints'' for Bergamo Cathedral, and a ''Deposition from the Cross'' for Sant'Andrea. Other works of his are in the Accademia Carrara. and the National Gallery, London (''Salvator Mundi'' and '' The Virgin and Child with a Shoot of Olive'', both left to the gallery in 1910). Previtali gained notice in 1937 in the United Kingdom for "not being Giorgione". Kenneth Clark, then Director of the National Gallery, bought two small panels of his from a dealer in Vienna, each with two rustic scenes. ''Lament over the Dead Christ'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by Lorenzo Lotto, created ''c.'' 1522, now in the sacristy of Sant'Alessandro in Colonna on via Sant'Alessandro in Bergamo. The work was restored in 1548, 1702, 1880 and 1998, not always respecting the original tones and colours and thus rendering it difficult to recognise Lotto's traditional characteristics. The work was commissioned for the Corpus Domini chapel by the 'Societas Corporis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi et Sancti Joseph', a confraternity. The commission was probably made between 1521 and 1523. When the church was modified and the altar rededicated, the painting was moved to the sacristy. Mystery Play
Mystery plays and miracle plays (they are distinguished as two different forms although the terms are often used interchangeably) are among the earliest formally developed plays in medieval Europe. Medieval mystery plays focused on the representation of Bible stories in churches as tableaux with accompanying antiphonal song. They told of subjects such as the Creation, Adam and Eve, the murder of Abel, and the Last Judgment. Often they were performed together in cycles which could last for days. The name derives from '' mystery'' used in its sense of ''miracle,'' but an occasionally quoted derivation is from ''ministerium'', meaning ''craft'', and so the 'mysteries' or plays performed by the craft guilds.
