Laikas ( ; rus, Ла́йка, Romanization of Russian, romanized: Layka, p=ˈlajkə) are aboriginal spitz from Northern Russia, especially Siberia but also sometimes expanded to include Nordic hunting breeds. Laika breeds are primitive dogs who flourish with minimal care even in hostile weather. Generally, laika breeds are expected to be versatile hunting dogs, capable of hunting game of a variety of sizes by treeing small game, pointing and baying larger game and working as teams to corner bear and boar. Russo-European Laika
Russo-European Laika (Russko-Evropeĭskaya Láĭka) is the name of a breed of hunting dog that originated in the forested region of northern Europe and Russia, one of several breeds developed from landrace Laika dogs of Spitz type. The Russo-European Laika itself dates to a breeding program begun in 1944 by E. I. Shereshevsky of the All-Union Research Institute for the Hunting Industry, in Kalinin (now Tver) Province. Breed recognition The Russo-European Laika is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in the Spitz and Primitive types/Section 2: Nordic Hunting Dogs Group. The Yakutian Laika () is a recently recognized dog breed originating from the Yakutia region of Siberia. In ancient times, the dogs were employed by the native Yakut people, Yakute people as universal animals. Nenets Herding Laika
The Nenets Herding Laika is an aboriginal spitz landrace of dog originating from the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, in Russia. Unlike other laikas, Nenets Herding Laika are less commonly used for hunting. Instead they have been selected primarily for reindeer herding ability, originally by the Nenets people, and later by reindeer herders through Russia. Nenets herding laika are thought to be the progenitor of several modern breeds, the most well-documented being the Samoyed. Despite this, the breed almost died out during the Soviet era due to lack of interest in preserving genetically purebred examples. Chukotka Sled Dog
The Chukotka Sled Dog (, '' hukótskaya yezdováya'', " Chukotsky riding dog", literally "riding Chukotsky") is the aboriginal spitz breed of dog indigenous to the Chukchi people of Russia. Chukotka sled dog teams have been used since prehistoric times to pull sleds in harsh conditions, such as when hunting sea mammals on oceanic pack ice. The Kamchatka Sled Dog () is a rare landrace of sled Laika (dog type), laika developed by the Itelmens, Itelmen and Koryaks, Koryak people of Kamchatka Peninsula, Kamchatka, Russia. There are currently efforts underway to revive the breed. A standard for the Kamchatka Sled Dog was approved by the Russian Federation of Service Dog Breeding in February of 1992. Description Kamchatka Sled Dogs are large, hardy, cold tolerant dogs with a thick double coat capable of withstanding high winds and extreme temperatures.
