Lahti Symphony
The Lahti Symphony Orchestra (''Sinfonia Lahti'') is a Finnish orchestra, based in the city of Lahti. The orchestra is resident at the Sibelius Hall. The orchestra was founded in 1910, and placed under the control of the Lahti municipality in 1949. History Past chief conductors of the orchestra have included Ulf Söderblom (1985-1988). Osmo Vänskä became principal guest conductor of the orchestra in 1985, and chief conductor in 1988. During his tenure, he and the orchestra have achieved wide acclaim, particularly with performances and recordings of Sibelius. Other recordings by Vänskä and the orchestra include music of Robert Kajanus and Einojuhani Rautavaara. Vänskä concluded his tenure as Chief Conductor in 2008 and became Conductor Laureate of the orchestra. Jukka-Pekka Saraste served as artistic advisor to the orchestra from August 2008 to July 2011. Dima Slobodeniouk
Dima Slobodeniouk (Димa Слободенюк; born 1975) is a Finnish conductor. Early Years Slobodeniouk was born in Moscow. As a youth, Slobodeniouk began his violin studies from 1980 to 1989, at the Moscow Central Music School, where his teachers included Zinaida Gilels. He settled in Finland at age sixteen. Slobodeniouk continued his violin studies at the Conservatory of Central Finland and the Sibelius Academy. He was also in the conducting class of the Sibelius Academy, where his teachers included Leif Segerstam, Jorma Panula and Atso Almila. Career Slobodeniouk was principal guest conductor of the Kymi Sinfonietta from 2004 to 2006. From 2005 to 2008, he was chief conductor of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra (Oulu Sinfonia). Kalevi Aho
Kalevi Ensio Aho (born 9 March 1949) is a Finnish composer. Early years Aho began his interest in music at the age of ten, when he discovered a mandolin in his home and began to teach himself how to play it. He soon was taken under the tutelage of Martti Loikkanen, the boy's 4th grade teacher and founder of a local youth mandolin ensemble in Forssa. After learning how to read sheet music, Aho immediately started composing. Aho progressed so fast on the instrument that Loikkanen suggested he study the violin as well, with Loikkanen giving him private lessons. Aho also began to learn violin at an incredible speed, with him later recalling, "Martti taught me at home for free until I started skipping him out of my playing skills and he suggested changing teachers." Hannu Petteri Lintu (born 13 October 1967) is a Finnish conductor. Early life and education Hannu Lintu was born in Rauma, the son of Johannes Lintu, an electrical engineer, and his wife Lilja Lintu (née Toivonen), a photographer. He studied piano and cello at the Turku Conservatory and at the Sibelius Academy. He also studied conducting with Atso Almila, and later with Jorma Panula and Eri Klas. Dalia Stasevska (; born 30 December 1984) is a Ukrainian-born Finnish conductor. She is currently principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra (Sinfonia Lahti). Biography Born in Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, Stasevska and her family subsequently moved to Tallinn, and later to Finland when she was five. Anja Bihlmaier (born 11 October 1978) is a German conductor. Biography Bihlmaier was born in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Her parents sang in a church choir, and she learned the recorder as a youth. She later studied piano and violin. Her teachers included Roland Baldini, Johannes Pfitzer and Volker Stenzl. She continued piano studies with Elza Kolodin at the ''Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Freiburg'', from which she graduated in 2003. Okko Kamu
Okko Tapani Kamu (born 7 March 1946, Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish orchestral conductor and violinist. Kamu was born in Helsinki, the son of Adam Kamu, a musician, and his wife Eine (Syrjänen) Kamu, a violin maker. His father played double bass in the Helsinki Philharmonic. He began violin studies at age two and entered the Sibelius Academy at age six. He formed his own string quartet, the Suhonen, in 1964 where he played first violin. At age 20, he was appointed first solo violinist at the Finnish National Opera, and held this post until 1968. He then began to conduct, initially with the Finnish National Opera orchestra. Primarily self-taught, he became principal guest conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera in 1969, the same year as he won the first Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition in Berlin. Jukka-Pekka Saraste
Jukka-Pekka Saraste (born 22 April 1956) is a Finnish conductor and violinist. Biography Saraste was born in Heinola, the son of teachers Kauko Pekka Saraste and Ritva Leena-Marjatta (Ruoranen) Saraste. He was trained as a violinist at the Conservatory of Music in Lahti (Lahden Musiikkiopisto) and later studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Panula in the same class as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Osmo Vänskä. Before becoming a conductor, Saraste was co-principal second violinist and later an associate to Leif Segerstam, with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO). In 1983, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Saraste co-founded the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, which specialises in performances of contemporary music.
