Finnish national road 4 ( or ; or ; also known as Lahti Highway (; ) in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area) is a Highways in Finland, highway in Finland. It is the main route from Helsinki to Northern Finland and a major road link in the country. It runs from Erottaja in Helsinki to Sami Bridge in Utsjoki. The road is long, making it Finland's longest highway. The road is also part of the European route E75 and of Trans-European road network, TERN; the section between Oulu and Kemi is part of the European route E8. Overview The route of the road is Helsinki – Lahti – Heinola – Jyväskylä – Äänekoski – Oulu – Kemi – Rovaniemi – Sodankylä – Ivalo – Inari, Finland, Inari – Utsjoki. At Heinola, another highway called Finnish national road 5 branches off from the road, which passes through Mikkeli, Kuopio, Kajaani and Kuusamo, and finally rejoins Highway 4 at Sodankylä. Finnish national road 29 (; ) is a highway in Finland between Keminmaa and Tornio. The road is part of the European route E8, except for the one kilometer section between the national boundary and the intersection with highway 21, where the road is part of the European route E4. Overview The highway is long. The eastern 14 kilometer section of the road is part of a motorway called ''Perämerentie'' (which in English translates roughly to "''The road of Bothnian bay''"), and is the northernmost motorway/freeway in the world with Alaska Highway 3 in Fairbanks, Alaska being the second northernmost. Although there are some grade separated roads built closely to motorway standards even further north, such as the Rovaniemi bypass in Finnish highway 4, they aren't signed as motorways. The Finnish national road 22 (; ; also known as ''Kainuuntie'', "Kainuu Road") is the main route between the major cities of Oulu and Kajaani in northern Finland. The road is long, and it is part of the national transport route network that connects two regions, North Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. At the Oulu end, the road connects to Highway 4 ( E8/ E75), while at the Kajaani end, it connects to Highway 5 ( E63). The Finnish Transport Agency improved the entrance section of Highway 22 in Oulu between Joutsentie and Konttisentie, with the aim of increasing traffic flow and safety. In this contract, the section of Highway 22 between Joutsentie and Haarankangas was widened into a four-lane median road and the section between Haarankangas and Sääskensuontie was improved to a two-lane median road.
