Lagrange-class Submarine
The ''Lagrange''-class submarines were a class of foursubmarines built for the French Navy during World War I and the interwar period. Threeships of this type were built in the Arsenal de Toulon from 1913 to 1924, and onewas built at the Arsenal de Rochefort shipyard. Entering the French ''Marine Nationale'' from 1918 to 1924, the submarines served until the mid-1930s. Periscope
A periscope is an instrument for observation over, around or through an object, obstacle or condition that prevents direct line-of-sight observation from an observer's current position. In its simplest form, it consists of an outer case with mirrors at each end set parallel to each other at a 45° angle. Conning Tower
A conning tower is a raised platform on a ship or submarine, often armoured, from which an officer in charge can conn (nautical), conn (conduct or control) the vessel, controlling movements of the ship by giving orders to those responsible for the ship's engine, rudder, lines, and ground tackle. Gaston Romazzotti
Gaston Romazotti (1855-1915) was a French naval engineer of the late 19th and early 20th century, and an early designer of submarines. Early life Romazotti was born at Molsheim, in Bas-Rhin, in July 1855. After studying at the École Polytechnique and qualified as a marine engineering, marine engineer before starting work at the Arsenal de Toulon, Toulon Naval Yard in southern France. Career At Toulon Romazotti worked with Henri Dupuy de Lôme and Gustave Zédé, both pioneers in submarine design, on the ''French submarine Gymnote (Q1), Gymnote'', one of the world's first all-electric submarines and the first functional submarine to be equipped with torpedoes. Henri Victor Regnault (21 July 1810 – 19 January 1878) was a French chemist and physicist best known for his careful measurements of the thermal properties of gases. He was an early thermodynamicist and was mentor to William Thomson in the late 1840s. He never used his first given name, and was known throughout his lifetime as Victor Regnault.
