Laetitia Griffith
Laetitia Juliëtte Griffith (born 1 November 1965) is a retired Surinam (Dutch colony), Surinamese–born Netherlands, Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and jurist. Career Born in Paramaribo, Suriname, Griffith moved to the Netherlands in 1987 to study law. She graduated in 1992 from the VU University Amsterdam. In 1993 she started work at the Ministry of Justice and Security, Ministry of Justice. In 2000 Griffith joined the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy after being advised to do so by Minister Benk Korthals. After the fall of the First Balkenende cabinet she became a member of the House of Representatives. On 16 May 2005 she became an alderman in the Amsterdam Municipal council (Netherlands), municipal council. On 19 May 2006 it was announced that Griffith would succeed Ayaan Hirsi Ali as parliamentarian. On 15 March 2010 she announced her retreat from politics. The Order of Orange-Nassau () is a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry founded on 4 April 1892 by the queen regent, Emma of the Netherlands. The order is a chivalric order open to "everyone who has performed acts of special merits for society.” These are people who deserve appreciation and recognition from society for the special way in which they have carried out their activities. An order is a visible honour awarded by a sovereign state, monarch, dynastic house or organisation to a person, typically in recognition of individual merit, that often comes with distinctive insignia such as collars, medals, badges, and sashes worn by recipients. Modern honour systems of state orders and dynastic orders emerged from the culture of orders of chivalry of the Middle Ages, which in turn emerged from the Catholic religious orders. Terminology The word order (), in the case referred to in this article, can be traced back to the chivalric orders, including the military orders, which in turn trace the name of their organisation back to that of the Catholic religious orders. Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Ayaan Hirsi Ali (; born 13 November 1969) is a Dutch and American writer, activist, conservative thinker and former politician. She is a critic of Islam and an advocate for the rights and self-determination of Muslim women, opposing forced marriage, honour killing, child marriage, and female genital mutilation. At the age of five, following local traditions in Somalia, Ali underwent female genital mutilation organized by her grandmother. Her father Hirsi Ali Magan—a scholar, intellectual, and a devout Muslim—was against the procedure but could not stop it from happening because he was imprisoned by the Communist government of Somalia at the time. An alderman is a member of a Municipal government, municipal assembly or council in many jurisdictions founded upon English law with similar officials existing in the Netherlands (wethouder) and Belgium (schepen). The term may be titular, denoting a high-ranking member of a borough or county council, a council member chosen by the elected members themselves rather than by Direct election, popular vote, or a council member elected by voters. First Balkenende Cabinet
The first Balkenende cabinet was the executive branch of the Netherlands government from 22 July 2002 until 27 May 2003. The cabinet was formed by the Christian-democratic Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), the nationalistic Pim Fortuyn List (LPF) and the conservative-liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) after the election of 2002. The cabinet was a right-wing coalition and had a substantial majority in the House of Representatives with Christian Democratic Leader Jan Peter Balkenende serving as Prime Minister.
