Ladipo Akinkugbe
Oladipo Olujimi Akinkugbe (17 July 1933 – 15 May 2020) popularly known as Baba or Prof was the first Nigerian professor of medicine at the University of Ibadan. He specialised in hypertension and nephrology. He was a former chairman of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), former vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the foundation Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin. Early life and education Ladipo Akinkugbe was born on 17 July 1933 to the house of Akinkugbe in Ondo state. He obtained his first degree in medicine from the University College Ibadan and University of London in 1958 and did his internship at the London Hospital and King's College Hospital, London. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is a federal government-owned public research university in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions. The board conducts Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for prospective undergraduates into Nigerian universities. The board is also charged with the responsibility to administer similar examinations for applicants to Nigerian public and private monotechnics, polytechnics, and colleges of educations. All of these candidates must have obtained the West Africa Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) conducted yearly by the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, or its equivalent, National Examination Council (Nigeria), Senior School Certificate Examination, NECO SSCE. Tropical medicine is an interdisciplinary branch of medicine that deals with health issues that occur uniquely, are more widespread, or are more difficult to control in tropical and subtropical regions. Physicians in this field diagnose and treat a variety of diseases and ailments. Most infections they deal with are endemic to the tropics. A few of the most well-known include malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis. They must be knowledgeable in the 18 lesser known neglected tropical diseases, which include Chagas disease, rabies, and dengue.
