Lac La Belle (Michigan)
Lac La Belle is a lake in Grant Township, Keweenaw County, Michigan. The lake is surrounded by dense forest cover of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The bottom is mainly mud and it has a maximum depth of . The Little Gratiot River flows into the lake on the west shore and the lake empties through the Mendota Canal into Lake Superior. There is a state owned boat launch on the north side of the lake near the community of Lac La Belle. Haven Falls is a waterfall that is part of the Haven Creek. Grant Township is a civil township of Keweenaw County, Michigan, Keweenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 275 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Grant Township is one of the most isolated municipalities in Michigan, as it forms the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, which projects into Lake Superior. History Grant Township was one of the original townships of Keweenaw County, Michigan, Keweenaw County, which was organized in 1861. Lac La Belle, Michigan
Lac La Belle ( ; French: "''Lake The Beautiful''") is a small unincorporated community in Keweenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The town was originally the site of a stamping plant for the copper mines of the Keweenaw, specifically the Mendota Mine and the Delaware Mine. Copper-bearing rock was transported from the mines to the stamping plant, where it was processed and loaded onto freighters. The nearby lake of the same name is a typical "Canadian Shield"-type lake averaging approximately and empties into Lake Superior at Bete Gris, by way of both a natural channel and a dredged canal. The canal was dredged in the 1860s with funding from several copper mining companies, for use by lake freighters, carrying copper ore. The Keweenaw Peninsula (, ) is a peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan.
