Labour For Independence
Labour for Independence (LFI) is a political organisation for Scottish Labour supporters who are in favour of Scottish independence. It claimed to have 2,000 members across Scotland in June 2014. Following the September 2014 independence referendum its founder Allan Grogan joined the Scottish Socialist Party, while the organisation itself went inactive. It relaunched in 2017 after the 2016 Brexit referendum and is now led by its national organiser Scott Abel. Ideology Labour for Independence claimed to adhere to Labour's "founding principles ..of fairness, equality and justice" and sought to offer a vision of an independent Scotland for Labour supporters, in lieu of Scottish Labour doing so. Scottish Independence
Scottish independence (; ) is the idea of Scotland regaining its independence and once again becoming a sovereign state, independent from the United Kingdom. The term Scottish independence refers to the political movement that is campaigning to bring it about. Scotland was an independent kingdom through the Middle Ages, and fought wars to maintain its independence from England. The two kingdoms were united in personal union in 1603 when the Scottish King James VI became James I of England, and the two kingdoms united politically into one kingdom called Great Britain in 1707. This movement united the countries which ended the wars of independence and created relative peace. Political campaigns for Scottish self-government began in the 19th century, initially in the form of demands for home rule within the United Kingdom. Jeane Freeman
Jeane Tennent Freeman (born 28 September 1953) is a Scottish people, Scottish retired businesswoman and politician who served as Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport from 2018 to 2021. The Scotsman
''The Scotsman'' is a Scottish compact (newspaper), compact newspaper and daily news website headquartered in Edinburgh. First established as a radical political paper in 1817, it began daily publication in 1855 and remained a broadsheet until August 2004. Its parent company, National World, also publishes the ''Edinburgh Evening News''. It had an audited print circulation of 8,762 for July to December 2022. An election commission is a body charged with overseeing the implementation of electioneering process of any country. The formal names of election commissions vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and may be styled an electoral commission, a central or state election commission, or an election board, an electoral council or an electoral court. The ''Sunday Herald'' was a Scottish Sunday newspaper, published between 7 February 1999 and 2 September 2018. Originally a broadsheet, it was published in compact format from 20 November 2005. The paper was known for having combined a centre-left stance with support for Scottish devolution, and later Scottish independence. The last edition of the newspaper was published on 2 September 2018 and it was replaced with Sunday editions of ''The Herald'' and ''The National''''. Circulation In July 2012, the newspapers' publishers classified the ''Sunday Herald'' as a regional instead of a national title. Ian Murray (born 10 August 1976) is a Scottish politician who has served as Secretary of State for Scotland since July 2024. A member of the Labour Party, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Edinburgh South since 2010. He previously served as Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland from 2015 to 2016 and again from 2020 to 2024. 2019 United Kingdom General Election In Scotland
The 2019 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 12 December 2019, two and a half years after the previous 2017 United Kingdom general election, general election in June 2017. The Scottish National Party (SNP) received the most votes (45%, up 8.1% from the previous election) and won 48 out of 59 seats—a gain of 13 over those won in 2017, and 81% of the Scottish seats in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons. SNP gains came at the expense of both Labour and the Conservatives. The Tories remained the largest unionist party in Scotland even though they lost more than half of their Scottish seats, winning six compared to thirteen in 2017. ''The National'' is a Scottish daily newspaper owned by Newsquest. It began publication on 24 November 2014, and was the first daily newspaper in Scotland to support Scottish independence. The March and Rally for Scottish Independence was a demonstration in support of Scottish independence that had taken place in Scotland's capital, Edinburgh, in both 2012 and 2013. Deacon Blue are a Scottish pop rock band formed in Glasgow in 1985. The line-up of the band consists of vocalists Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh, keyboard player James Prime, drummer Dougie Vipond, guitarist Gregor Philp and bassist Lewis Gordon.
