Laborie District
Laborie District is one of 10 districts (formerly quarters) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. According to the 2002 census, the population of the Quarter was 7,414 people. The village of Laborie is located about south of Castries, the nation's capital. History The first inhabitants of the Laborie general area, migrating from South America around 1000 a.c., were probably the Arawak Amerindians. Laborie, a southwestern fishing village named after the French governor Baron De Laborie, was once a turtle habitat. French colonials were probably the first to settle what is now the village of Laborie, in the early 18th century. Dame Calliopa Pearlette Louisy (born 8 June 1946) is a Saint Lucian academic, who served as governor-general of Saint Lucia from 19 September 1997, until her resignation on 31 December 2017. She is the first woman to hold the vice-regal office, as well as the longest-serving governor-general in the history of Saint Lucia. Sir Allan Fitzgerald Laurent Louisy (5 September 1916 – 2 March 2011) was the second prime minister of independent St Lucia, following Sir John Compton in office. He was born in Laborie on 5 September 1916 and served as a judge before being elected to parliament in 1974. Louisy was Leader of the Opposition from 1974 to 1979. In the 1979 general elections, Louisy became prime minister following the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) victory. He also held the additional portfolio of Minister of Finance. He was succeeded as prime minister by Winston Cenac. After retiring from politics, Sir Allan Louisy continued working as a consultant and as a lawyer. He was also actively involved in the trade union movement. In his later years, he retired to his home in Saphyr Estate, and continued to spend his time volunteering in Laborie.
