La Croix-Rousse
La Croix-Rousse () is a hill high in the city of Lyon, France, as well as the name of a neighborhood located on this hill. The neighborhood is divided into ''les pentes'' (slopes, belonging to the city's 1st arrondissement) and ''le plateau'' (atop the hill, part of the 4th arrondissement). This zone is served by Lyon Metro Line C. With 18th century architecture, including unique dwellings for labourers, La Croix-Rousse was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 (along with other districts in Lyon) to protect Lyon's long history as an important European city. The production of silk originated in Neolithic China within the Yangshao culture (4th millennium BCE). Gros Caillou
Gros Caillou (literally "big pebble") is a landmark of the French city of Lyon in the neighborhood Croix-Rousse. The rock's mineralogical composition suggests it is a glacial erratic, and would have been transported from the nearby Alps by slowly moving glaciers. Localization Originally, Gros Caillou was located at the end of Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse, constructed in 1865, and the boundary between the 1st arrondissement (Croix-Rousse hill) and the 4th arrondissement (Croix-Rousse plateau). Canut
The canuts () were Lyonnais silk workers, often working on Jacquard looms. They were primarily found in the Croix-Rousse neighbourhood of Lyon in the 19th century. Although the term generally refers to Lyonnais silk workers, silk workers in the nearby commune of l'Arbresle are also called canuts. Etymology The word canut may come from an abbreviation of the French expression "Voici les cannes nues!" (''Look at those bare canes!''), as canes without any charms or ribbons were considered a sign of poverty. It may equally well come from the word ''canette'' ('' spool'') referring to the spool on which the silk was kept prior to being used. Boulevard De La Croix-Rousse
The () is a boulevard that marks the border between the 1st and the 4th arrondissements of Lyon, in the neighborhood Croix-Rousse. Location The boulevard runs east–west and is the border between the 1st and 4th arrondissements and the neighborhoods and Plateau de la Croix-Rousse. History The Croix-Rousse ramparts were reconstructed in 1834 on the remains of 16th century ramparts, which had been demolished during the revolt of Lyon against the National Convention in 1793. In 1852 when Croix-Rousse became a quarter of Lyon the ramparts were destroyed to facilitate the integration of the new quarter. Juan Pablo Machado is a Colombian-French artist. He is best known for his animation work on the channel Lofi Girl. Early life Juan Pablo Machado is originally from Cali, Colombia. After a stint at an art school in Bogotá, he moved to Lyon in 2013 to study at the École Émile-Cohl. He left the École Émile-Cohl in 2018. Career Lofi Girl In 2017, during his final year of study, he decided to respond to a call for artists received by his school. The call came from the YouTube channel ChilledCow (now Lofi Girl), which broadcasts lofi hip-hop music live. The channel originally used an image of the character Shizuku Tsukishima, from the Studio Ghibli movie '' Whisper of the Heart'' showing the character of Shizuku studying. However, ChilledCow's stream had been taken down due to copyright infringement, so it called for an artist. Lofi Girl (formerly ChilledCow until 2021) is a French YouTube channel and Record label, music label established in 2017. It provides Live streams, livestreams of Lofi hip hop, lo-fi hip hop music 24/7, accompanied by a Anime-influenced animation, Japanese-style animation of a girl studying or relaxing in her bedroom with a cat on the window. Canut Revolts
The Canut revolts () is the collective name for the major revolts by Lyonnais silk workers () which occurred in 1831, 1834 and 1848. They were among the first well-defined worker uprisings of the period known as the Industrial Revolution. The First Canut revolt in 1831 was provoked by a bad economy and a resultant drop in silk prices, which caused a drop in workers' wages. In an effort to maintain their standard of living, the workers tried to see a minimum price imposed on silk. The refusal of the manufacturers to pay this price infuriated the workers, who went into open revolt. They seized the arsenal and repulsed the local national guard and military in a bloody battle, which left the insurgents in control of the town. The government sent Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult, a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, at the head of an army of 20,000 to restore order.
