La Altagracia
La Altagracia () is a province located in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. It is the only region that borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is divided into two municipalities and its capital is the beach city of Punta Cana. The province was part of the old La Altagracia Province, which split into two, La Altagracia Province and La Romana Province, on February 27, 1961. The name "La Altagracia"' meaning the "High Grace" commemorates a painting, '' Our Lady of Altagracia'', which was brought to this area from Spain in the early 16th century. Numerous miracles are attributed to the image. Currently it is the leading province of the country in terms of tourism. Juan De Esquivel
Juan de Esquivel (c. 1480 – c. 1513) was a Spanish colonist and first governor of the Colony of Santiago, now Jamaica. Biography Conquistador Juan de Esquivel was a native of Seville, the son of Pedro de Esquivel and Constanza Fernandez de Arauz. His grandfather, Gabriel Sánchez, had been a controller of customs in Seville. Juan de Esquivel accompanied Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage to the West Indies where he settled on Hispaniola. In 1502 the governor of the Indies, Nicolás de Ovando, sent Esquivel with 400 men to subjugate the Tainos on the eastern end of the island. The region was depopulated and many of the defeated natives were made slaves. As a young man, Bartolomé de las Casas was part of the Spanish force and later wrote about the violence he witnessed. The Chavón River is a river located to the east of the Dominican Republic. Its best view is obtained from the village called Altos de Chavón. The Basilica-Cathedral of Our Lady of Altagracia (in Spanish, ''Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia'') is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and cathedral in the Dominican Republic dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia, patroness of the nation. It is in Salvaleón de Higüey. The basilica is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Higüey. The cathedral was raised to the honor of a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI on December 17, 1970. It was visited by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the country in 1992. Among many legends, one stands out. A long time ago a young girl from Salvaleón de Higüey asked her father for a portrait of the Virgin Mary. Higüey (), or in full Salvaleón de Higüey, is the capital city of the eastern La Altagracia Province, in the Dominican Republic, and has 415,084 inhabitants, according to the 2022 census.
