LNER P2 Class 2007 Prince Of Wales
LNER Class P2 No. 2007 ''Prince of Wales'' is a 2-8-2 "Mikado" steam locomotive being built at Darlington Locomotive Works, England, and managed by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. It will be the seventh member of its class and the only P2 in existence; the original six were built between 1934 and 1936 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) to a design by Nigel Gresley, and employed to haul heavy passenger trains on the Edinburgh–Dundee line, Edinburgh to Aberdeen line. The P2s were declared Britain's most powerful express passenger engines, although none were preserved. Nigel Gresley
Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley (19 June 1876 – 5 April 1941) was a British railway engineer. He was one of Britain's most famous steam locomotive engineers, who rose to become Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). He was the designer of some of the most famous steam locomotives in Britain, including the GNR Class A1, LNER Class A1 and LNER Class A4 Whyte notation, 4-6-2 4-6-2, Pacific engines. A loading gauge is a diagram or physical structure that defines the maximum height and width dimensions in railway vehicles and their loads. In materials science, fatigue is the initiation and propagation of cracks in a material due to cyclic loading. Once a fatigue crack has initiated, it grows a small amount with each loading cycle, typically producing striation (fatigue), striations on some parts of the fracture surface. The valve gear of a steam engine is the mechanism that operates the inlet and exhaust valves to admit steam into the cylinder and allow exhaust steam to escape, respectively, at the correct points in the cycle. A poppet valve (also sometimes called mushroom valve) is a valve typically used to control the timing and quantity of petrol (gas) or vapour flow into or out of an engine, but with many other applications. Hugo Lentz
Hugo Lentz (1859–1944) was an Austrian mechanical engineer, born in Cape Colony. He was the inventor of many award-winning improvements to the steam engine. The correct spelling of his name is Lenz but it has been Anglicised to Lentz in English-speaking countries. Life and career Lentz was born on 21 July 1859 in Cape Colony.
