LNER Class F6
The GER Class G69 was a class of twenty steam locomotives built by for the Great Eastern Railway by S. D. Holden in 1911–12 following the design of two rebuilt examples of the GER Class M15 designed by James Holden, his father, in 1904. They all passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the 1923 grouping and received the classification F6. History These locomotives were fitted with cylinders and wheels. They were the final development of the GER's radial ) tank locomotive. Being intended for London suburban service, they were built with condensing gear, and Westinghouse air brakes. All were still in service at the 1923 grouping, the LNER adding 7000 to the numbers of nearly all the ex-Great Eastern locomotives, including the Class G69 locomotives. James Holden (engineer)
James Holden (26 July 1837 – 29 May 1925) was an English locomotive engineer. He is remembered mainly for the GER Classes S46, D56 and H88, "Claud Hamilton" 4-4-0, his pioneering work with fuel oil, oil fuel, and his unique GER Class A55, "Decapod". Biography James Holden was born in Whitstable, Kent on 26 July 1837. He was apprenticed to his uncle, Edward Fletcher (engineer), Edward Fletcher and, in 1865, joined the Great Western Railway, where he eventually became chief assistant to William Dean (engineer), William Dean. In 1885 he was appointed Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Eastern Railway. He held office from 1885 to 1907 and was succeeded by his son S. D. Holden, Stephen (1908–1912), who enlarged the GER Classes S46, D56 and H88, "Claud Hamilton" type into the capable GER Class S69, Class S69 4-6-0 design. James Holden was a Quaker. Rigid-framed electric locomotives were some of the first generations of electric locomotive design. When these began the traction motors of these early locomotives, particularly with AC motors, were too large and heavy to be mounted directly to the axles and so were carried on the frame. Stratford Works was the locomotive-building works of the Great Eastern Railway situated at Stratford, London, England. The original site of the works was located in the 'V' between the Great Eastern Main Line and the Stratford to Lea Bridge route and in the early years was also the home of Stratford Locomotive Depot. The final part of the works closed in 1991. Stratford TMD
Stratford TMD was a traction maintenance depot located in Stratford, London, England, close to the Great Eastern Main Line. It was located just west of Stratford station, on a site now occupied by Stratford International station. The depot was, at one time, the biggest on the London and North Eastern Railway with locomotives covering duties from express services to freight workings in London's docks. Locomotive construction took place at the adjacent Stratford Works and Stratford TMD was initially located on this site in the V between the Lea Bridge and Great Eastern Main Lines.
