LGBTQ Community Centre
An LGBTQ community centre (American spelling: LGBTQ community center), or pride center (from gay pride), is a building which hosts services for non-heterosexual youth, seniors, adult men and women, and trans individuals, as well as an organization which owns and maintains such a building on a non-profit, non-political basis. A gay village, also known as a gayborhood or gaybourhood, is a geographical area with generally recognized boundaries that is inhabited or frequented by many lesbian, gay, bisexuality, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. The LGBTI+ Federation (), previously French Federation of LGBT Centres (), is the Alliance of associations and community centres for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex people in France, as well as Associate Members. CenterLink is an American LGBT organization which was founded in 1994 as a member-based coalition to support the development of strong, sustainable, LGBTQ community centers. CenterLink produces an annual Leadership Summit for executive directors and board leaders of LGBTQ community centers and provides technical assistance and support to over 500 individuals and centers every year. Birmingham Lesbian And Gay Community Centre
The Birmingham Lesbian and Gay Community Centre was an LGBT community centre in Birmingham, England. Opened in December 1976 as the Birmingham Gay Community Centre in Bordesley Street, Digbeth, Birmingham, the centre was the first LGBT community centre to be established in the United Kingdom (there had been an illegal one in squat in Brixton, London from 1974 to 1976 ), and paved the way for the establishment of similar institutions in London and Manchester in the 1980s. Its headquarters were at the Nightingale Club from 1981 to 1984, before moving to a former clothing factory at 291 Corporation Street. The centre closed in 1987. Atlanta Gay Center
The Atlanta Gay Center was a community center that served the gay community in Atlanta, Georgia (United States). It was founded in 1976. It has since closed and been replaced by the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Community Center. The center published a bi-weekly newspaper, and operated the Gay Helpline for the Atlanta area. The center was the meeting place for several support groups including those for teens, interracial couples, older couples, and P-FLAG. ''Gay'' is a term that primarily refers to a homosexual person or the trait of being homosexual. The term originally meant 'carefree', 'cheerful', or 'bright and showy'. While scant usage referring to male homosexuality dates to the late 19th century, that meaning became increasingly common by the mid-20th century. In modern English, ''gay'' has come to be used as an adjective, and as a noun, referring to the community, practices and cultures associated with homosexuality.
