Kōyama Castle
was a ''yamajiro''-style Japanese castle located in the Shintomi-honjō neighborhood of the town of Kimotsuki, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Its ruins have been protected as a National Historic Site since 1945. Overview Kōyama Castle was located in a natural stronghold with the Honjō River to the south, the Kuriyama River to the north, the Takayama River to the west, and the steep cliffs of Shirasu Plateau to the east. Furthermore, a dry moat was created across the hilly area extending southwest from the mountain area, forming a curve. The castle was first constructed at the end of the Heian period when the descendants of Taira Kanesada, who was appointed as the ''benzai'' envoy (supervisor of the manor) of Shimazu ''shōen'', came to this area and settled. Kanesada's son, Kanetoshi, took the name of "Kimotsuki", and his descendants ruled for 18 generations, or over 400 years until the end of the Sengoku period. Nichinan Line
The is a railway line in south-eastern Kyushu, Japan, operated by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu). It connects Minami-Miyazaki Station in Miyazaki, Miyazaki to Shibushi Station in Shibushi, Kagoshima. History The Miyazaki Prefectural Government opened the first section of the line from Obi - Aburatsu in 1913, the same year that the Miyazaki Light Railway was opened from the port of Miyazaki to Uchiumi. The lines were linked in 1932, and nationalised in 1935. The extension to Kitago opened in 1941, and to Shibushi (as a passenger only section) in 1963. Steam locomotives were withdrawn from the line in 1973. Freight services to Kitago ceased in 1982, and in 1990 the Shibushi station was relocated 100m closer to Miyazaki. is a passenger railway station located in the city of Shibushi, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by JR Kyushu and is on the Nichinan Line. Lines The station is the southern terminus of the Nichinan Line and is located 88.9 km from the opposing terminus of the line at . Layout The station consists of a single side platform one track, and four side tracks. The current station building and platform were newly built exclusively for the Nichinan Line in 1990 after the abolishment of the Shibushi Line and Osumi Line. The term may also be written as 郭, and the term is also used for castles built after the Edo period.
