Kärnten Läuft
Kärnten läuft is an annual half marathon road running race around the lake Wörthersee. It starts in Velden am Wörther See and ends in Klagenfurt. It has been held every year since 2002 and typically takes place in August. Prior to the launch of the competition, a local athletics club, the ''Klagenfurter Leichtathletik Club'', held the Klagenfurter Marathon in the region. It hosted the Austrian national championship race in 1999 and 2001. It was disbanded upon the creation of the Kärnten läuft. Michael Buchleitner (born 14 October 1969 in Mödling) is an Austrian long-distance runner. Up to 1999 he specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He finished tenth at the 1993 World Championships and competed without reaching the final in 1997 and 1999. He did, however, achieve a personal best time of 8:20.04 minutes at the latter event. Competing at the Universiade he won a gold medal in 1993 and a bronze in 1997. He also finished fifth in 3000 metres at the 2002 European Indoor Athletics Championships. Carsten Eich (born 9 January 1970) is a retired (East) German runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres and the marathons. He is an eight-time German champion and national record holder in the half marathon. Running career He was born in Leipzig and represented the clubs SC DHfK Leipzig, SG Motor Gohlis-Nord Leipzig, LAC Quelle Fürth and LG Braunschweig. Helena Javornik (born 26 March 1966, in Celje) is a Slovenian long-distance runner who has specialized in all distances from 1500 metres to the marathon race. She holds the current national record in 10,000 m with 31:06.63 minutes, achieved at the 2004 Summer Olympics. She won the Ljubljana Marathon three times consecutively between 1996 and 1998. Her course record of 2:32:33 went unbettered for eleven years. She tested positive for EPO in March 2008 and was banned for two years by the International Association of Athletics Federations in June 2008. Bernard Barmasai (born 6 May 1974 in Keiyo) is an athlete from Kenya. He specialised in steeplechase running but is nowadays a marathoner. He set the new 3000 metres steeplechase world record of 7:55.72 on 24 August 1997 in Cologne. The record was broken by Brahim Boulami from Morocco in 2001. The time survived as a Kenyan Record until July 2011, when Brimin Kipruto ran a new African Record time of 7:53.64.
