Kyuquot Sound
Kyuquot Sound is a complex of coastal inlets, bays and islands on northwestern Vancouver Island in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of British Columbia. The sound is named after the Kyuquot/Cheklesahht First Nation, Kyuquot people, who are of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples by culture and language (incorrectly known as "Nootka"). Their local government, based at Kyuquot, is the Kyuquot/Cheklesahht First Nation which is a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is an island in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and part of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Nuu-chah-nulth Language
Nuu-chah-nulth (), Nootka (), is a Wakashan language in the Pacific Northwest of North America on the west coast of Vancouver Island, from Barkley Sound to Quatsino Sound in British Columbia by the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples. Nuu-chah-nulth is a Southern Wakashan language related to Nitinaht and Makah. It is the first language of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast to have documentary written materials describing it. In the 1780s, Captains Vancouver, Quadra, and other European explorers and traders frequented Nootka Sound and the other Nuu-chah-nulth communities, making reports of their voyages. Kyuquot/Cheklesahht First Nation
The Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h' First Nation (KCFN; or Kyuquot/Checleseht) is a modern treaty government located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. Before 1951, both the Kyuquot First Nation and the Cheklesath First Nation were separately managed and funded by the then Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. The Cheklesath people were very few in numbers and were not receiving adequate funding for housing and infrastructure from the federal government's Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. The Chekleset chiefs and elders met with the Kyuquot chiefs and elders to ask if their people could live amongst the Kyuquot people.
