Kven People
Kvens (; fi, kveeni; no, kvenar, kvener; sv, kväner; se, kveanat) are a Balto-Finnic ethnic minority in Norway. They are descended from Finnish peasants and fishermen who emigrated from the northern parts of Finland and Sweden to Northern Norway in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1996, Kvens were granted minority status in Norway, and in 2005 the Kven language was recognized as a minority language in Norway. Name The origin of the term Kven is disputed. There is no evidence that modern Kvens are descendants of the Kvens mentioned in a few ancient Norwegian and Icelandic sources. As a result of Norway signing the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities in 1999, the term Kven became for the first time an official name, the name of Finnish descendants with a long history in Norway who view themselves as a member of that particular ethnic minority group of Finnish descent. Kven Language
The Kven language ( or ; or ; fi, kveeni or ; no, kvensk) is a Finnic language or a group of Finnish dialects spoken in the northernmost parts of Norway by the Kven people. For political and historical reasons, it received the status of a minority language in 2005 within the framework of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Linguistically, however, it is seen as a mutually intelligible dialect of the Finnish language, and grouped together with the Peräpohjola dialects such as Meänkieli, spoken in Torne Valley in Sweden. While it is often considered a dialect in Finland, it is officially recognized as a minority language in Norway and some Kven people consider it a separate language. There are about 1,500 to 10,000 known native speakers of this language, most of whom are over the age of 60. Middle aged speakers tend to have a passing knowledge of the language. Kvenland
Kvenland, known as ''Cwenland'', ''Qwenland'', ''Kænland'', and similar terms in medieval sources, is an ancient name for an area in Fennoscandia and Scandinavia. Kvenland, in that or nearly that spelling, is known from an Old English language, Old English account written in the 9th century, which used information provided by Norway, Norwegian adventurer and traveler Ohthere of Hålogaland, Ohthere, and from Nordic countries, Nordic sources, primarily Icelandic. A possible additional source was written in the modern-day area of Norway. All known Nordic sources date from the 12th and 13th centuries. KVEN (1520 AM, "La Voz 1520 AM & 96.3 FM") is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Port Hueneme, California and serves the Ventura County area. The station is owned by Gold Coast Broadcasting and broadcasts a Spanish-language news/talk format. By day, KVEN has a power of 10,000 watts. With a good radio, it can be heard up and down the Pacific Coast of California, from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Because AM 1520 is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A KOKC in Oklahoma City and WWKB in Buffalo, New York, KVEN drops its power at night to 1,000 watts to reduce interference. KVEN (1450 AM, "SportsRadio 1450") was a radio station licensed to Ventura, California. Operating from 1948 to 2021, KVEN last carried sports radio programming from the national CBS Sports Radio network, with no locally-originated programming. It was owned by Cumulus Media and broadcast with a power of 1,000 watts. History KVEN first signed on in March 1948 and aired a variety of programming during its first four decades. In 1965, Carroll R. Houser sold KVEN and sister station KHAY, KVEN-FM to a group consisting of Ira Laufer, Robert L. Fox, and Greater California Capital Corporation — collectively doing business as KVEN Broadcasting Corporation — for $500,000. Etymology Of Kven
The origin of the name ''Kven'' is unclear. The name appears for the first time in a 9th-century Old English version, written by King Alfred of Wessex, of a work by the Roman author Orosius, in the plural form ''Cwenas''. Today, however, '' Kven'' refers to Finnish ( Kven) speaking people who have migrated to northern Norway in relatively recent times, with no connection to the ''Cwenas/Kænir'' mentioned in the sagas.
