Kural Peedam Award
The Kural Peedam Award () is a lifetime achievement presidential award given to eminent scholars of classical Tamil. The award was instituted in 2005 by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India), Ministry of Human Resource Development in India. Two awards are presented annually, one for a person of Indian origin and another for a scholar of non-Indian origin. the award includes of a cash prize of 500,000 (just over $8,000 USD), a citation, and a shawl. Central Institute Of Classical Tamil
The Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) is a body established by the Government of India with a view to promoting the cause of Tamil language, Classical Tamil. It is located in Chennai. History The CICT was formerly known as the Centre of Excellence for Classical Tamil (CECT) and had been functioning at the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, a branch of the Department of Higher Education, Language Bureau, Ministry of Human Resource Development. In May 2008, the CECT was moved to Chennai and was rechristened as the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT). The chairman of the new institute was the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi. The Ministry of Education (MoE) is a ministry of the Government of India, responsible for the implementation of the National Policy on Education. John Ralston Marr
John Ralston Marr (5 July 1927 – 19 May 2022) was a British Indologist, writer and a member of faculty at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He is known as a scholar of Carnatic music and Tamil literature and is the author of several publications including ''An introduction to colloquial Tamil'', ''The Pĕriya purāṇam frieze at Tārācuram : episodes in the lives of the Tamil Śaiva saints'', ''The eight Tamil anthologies, with special reference to Pur̲anān̲ūr̲u and Patir̲r̲uppattu'' and ''Letterature dravidiche'', the last one in Italian language. Thiruvalluvar Award
Thiruvalluvar Award is an annual award given by the Government of Tamil Nadu, State Government of Tamil Nadu, India, in memory of the ancient poet-philosopher Valluvar. It is given to those who have made an outstanding contribution towards the Kural literature and its philosophy. It is given in January of every year since 1986, on the 2nd day of the Tamil month of Tamil calendar, Thai observed by the Tamil Nadu government as the Valluvar year, Thiruvalluvar Day, and is given on behalf of Tamil Development Authority. The award The award carries a cash prize of 100,000, a 1-sovereign gold medal, and a citation. The award originally included a cash prize of 10,000. From 1991, the prize amount was increased to 20,000. From 1999, the prize amount was again increased to the current measure of 100,000. Tirukkural
The ''Tirukkuṟaḷ'' (), or shortly the ''Kural'' (), is a classic Tamil language text on commoner's morality consisting of 1,330 short couplets, or Kural (poetic form), kurals, of seven words each. The text is divided into three books with aphoristic teachings on virtue (Aram (Kural book), ''aram''), wealth (Porul (Kural book), ''porul'') and love (Inbam (Kural book), ''inbam''), respectively. It is widely acknowledged for its universality and secularity, secular nature. Its authorship is traditionally attributed to Thiruvalluvar, Valluvar, also known in full as Thiruvalluvar. The text has been dated variously from 300 BCE to 5th century CE. The traditional accounts describe it as the last work of the third Sangam literature, Sangam, but linguistic analysis suggests a later date of 450 to 500 CE and that it was composed after the Sangam period.
