Kunda, Estonia
Kunda is a town in Viru-Nigula Parish, Lääne-Viru County, Estonia, located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. Kunda is best known for its cement factory, port, and archaeological heritage. History Evidence of some of the oldest prehistoric communities in Estonia—hunting, and fishing communities that existed around 7th millennium BC, 6500 BC—were found near Kunda. This settlement gave the name to the Kunda culture. The first written record of Kunda dates back to 1241, when it was mentioned as a village. In 1443 it was mentioned as a manor. Jüri Parijõgi (until 1935 Jüri Parinbak or Jüri Parinbach; 2 September 1892 – 9 July 1941) was an Estonian children's writer and teacher. He is regarded as the first Estonian writer who wrote almost only for children and young people. He took part in World War I and in the Estonian War of Independence. From 1929 to 1931 he studied in the Faculty of Philosophy at University of Tartu. Michael Wittlich
Michael Wittlich (also Mihkel Vitsut; 11 October 1866 – 6 February 1933) was an Estonian chemist and professor. He acted as the professor for Technical Chemistry at Tartu University. Wittlich was born in Kunda. In 1890 he graduated from Riga Polytechnical Institute with an engineer's diploma. Following this he worked for a number of years at many factories within Tallinn, he began his teaching career in Riga Polytechnic in 1905, and obtained professorship in Chemical Technology there in 1909. From 1909 to 1918 he taught as a professor of Chemical Technology at Riga Polytechnical Institute, and from 1919 to 1932 at Tartu University. In 1925 (with Paul Kogermann) he established the oil shale laboratory at Tartu University.
