Kuldeep Manak
Kuldeep Manak, also spelled as Kuldip Manak (born Latif Mohammed Khan; 15 November 1951 – 30 November 2011), was an Indian singer best known for singing a rare genre of Punjabi music, ''kali'', also known by its plural form ''kalian'' or kaliyan. Manak is generally regarded as one of the greatest Punjabi artists of all time. His high pitched strong voice was unique, and instantly recognisable. A statue of Manak has been erected in Ludhiana near his residence as a tribute. Early life Manak was born as Latif Mohammed on 15 November 1951 to Nikka Khan in Mirasi family, in the village of Jalal in Bathinda district of Indian Punjab. Sardar Partap Singh Kairon (then Chief Minister of Punjab) penned the name Kuldip Manak, after being amazed by the quality of his voice at a school prize giving. Ragi (Sikhism)
A Ragi (; ''rāgī'') is a Sikh musician who plays hymns ( shabads) in different ragas as prescribed in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Arjan Dev, the 5th Guru of the Sikhs, started the ragi tradition of amateur musicians, as he didn't want the Sikhs to depend on professionals for their connection to the divine with sacred music. Ragis now are often professional and have much knowledge of the scriptures. Thus, they are highly respected. However, they are not a privileged elite as some today see them -- rather, the ragi tradition was meant to bring musical experience of the Sikh scriptures to a layperson, without a middleman (or woman). It was released after about one year of recording as the record manager of HMV, Zaheer Ahmad, delayed its release as he was frightened the record would not do well in the market. ''Punjab Dian Lok Gathawan'' ( pa, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋਕ-ਗਾਥਾਵਾਂ; also spelled as Punjab Diyan Lok Gathawan), the 7 inch, 45 rpm, was the first EP of Kuldeep Manak released by HMV (a subsidiary label of EMI) in 1973. The music was composed by Ram Saran Das and the lyrics were penned by Hardev Dilgir. Babu Singh Maan, also known as Maan Maraarhan Wala, is an Indian songwriter/lyricist of Punjabi-language folk songs. He penned the first song of singer Kuldeep Manak's career. Harcharan Garewal (1 oct.1930 – 6 May 1990) was an Indian singer of Punjabi-language folk songs and duets.
