Polish Language
Polish (Polish: ''język polski'', , ''polszczyzna'' or simply ''polski'', ) is a West Slavic language of the Lechitic group written in the Latin script. It is spoken primarily in Poland and serves as the native language of the Poles. In addition to being the official language of Poland, it is also used by the Polish diaspora. There are over 50 million Polish speakers around the world. It ranks as the sixth most-spoken among languages of the European Union. Polish is subdivided into regional dialects and maintains strict T–V distinction pronouns, honorifics, and various forms of formalities when addressing individuals. Krysia Nowak (born 1948), also known as Krysia Danuta Michna-Nowak, is a British painter and designer of Polish descent, working in mixed media. Early life Daughter of Squadron Leader and Henrietta Nowak, Krysia attended Notre Dame High School, Sheffield and the Henry Hartland Grammar School, Worksop. Nowak decided at the age of 11 that her sole ambition was to be an artist, something she pursued despite initial discouragement from her parents. Further education Krysia Nowak studied at Ealing College (now known as the West London College) graduating with a BA in the History of Art, French and Spanish in 1970. ''Fireman Sam'' (Welsh: ') is a Welsh animated children's television series about a fireman named Sam, his fellow firefighters, and other residents in the fictional Welsh rural village of Pontypandy (a portmanteau of two real towns, Pontypridd and Tonypandy). The original idea for the show came from two ex-firemen from London, England, who took their idea to artist and writer Rob Lee who developed the concept, and the show was commissioned. Halszka Wasilewska (soldier)
Halszka Wasilewska, sometimes called ''Halina'', (21 March 1899 – 8 February 1961), WW2 nom-de-guerre Krystyna, was one of the first women to attain the rank of Major in the Polish Armed Forces. She was a Legionnaire in the First world war and the subsequent Polish-Soviet War in 1920. She participated in the battle for Lwów and in the Polish - Ukrainian War. As an officer, she had special responsibility for training in the women's Polish Armed Forces during the interbellum. With the outbreak of WW2, she directed training for the women in the Polish Underground Army. She was captured and tortured by the Nazis and held in Ravensbrück concentration camp for two years. Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda (born Krystyna Zachwatowicz; 16 May 1930) is a Polish scenographer, costume designer and actress. She is a daughter of architect and restorer Jan Zachwatowicz and Maria Chodźko ''h.'' Kościesza, and wife of film director Andrzej Wajda. Member of the Polish Film Academy. She is a co-founder (with Andrzej Wajda) of Centre of Japanese Art and Technology "Manggha" in Kraków. Biography Zachwatowicz was born on 16 May 1930 in Warsaw, Poland. She graduated from the History of Art Faculty of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (1952) and Scenography faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1958). Maria Krystyna Janina Skarbek, (, ; 1 May 1908 – 15 June 1952), also known as Christine Granville, was a Polish agent of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. She became celebrated for her daring exploits in intelligence and irregular-warfare missions in Nazi-Occupation of Poland (1939–1945), occupied Poland and German occupation of France during World War II, France. Journalist Alistair Horne, who described himself in 2012 as one of the few people still alive who had known Skarbek, called her the "bravest of the brave."
