The Krouna train accident was a rail accident that happened on 24 June 1995 near Krouna, Pardubice Region, Czech Republic The Czech Republic, or simply Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. With 19 dead, it was the deadliest rail accident of the 1990s in the Czech Republic and one of the worst rail disasters in Czech history. A part of a freight train which was not properly braked and secured got loose during shunting at Čachnov station. Four cars picked speed (estimated to be 100 km/h) on a long descent and collided head-on with oncoming single class 810 diesel car. At that time, engine drivers were not equipped with wireless communication, so there was no way to warn the crew and passengers in time. Shunting, in railway operations, is the process of sorting items of rolling stock into complete trains, or the reverse. In the United States this activity is known as switching. Motive power Motive power is normally provided by a locomotive known as a ''shunter'' (in the UK) or switcher (in the US). Most shunter/switchers are now diesel-powered but steam and even electric locomotives have been used. Where locomotives could not be used (e.g. because of weight restrictions) shunting operations have in the past been effected by horses or capstans. Chrudim District
Chrudim District ( cs, okres Chrudim) is a district (''okres'') within Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. Its capital is the town of Chrudim. Overview The district has mostly flat terrain with slopes of Iron Mountains appearing on the south. Seč Dam is the largest water surface in the district (2.2 km2), Chrudimka is the longest river in the district (104 km). Radio Prague International ( cs, Český rozhlas 7 – Radio Praha) is the official international broadcasting station of the Czech Republic.
