The administrative center of the municipality is the Kristiansund (town), town of Kristiansund (established in 1742), which is the major town for the whole Nordmøre region. Other notable settlements in the municipality include the villages of Kvalvåg, Rensvik, and Nedre Frei. The municipality is the 334th largest by area out of the 357 municipalities in Norway. With a land area of only and a population of between 100-200 people, Grip was one of the smallest municipalities in Norway during its existence from 1897 until it merged with Kristiansund Municipality in 1964. Nordlandet
Nordlandet is an island in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island is located just east of the city center of Kristiansund, and is one of the boroughs of the city. The island is home to Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget, which is named after the nearby tall mountain Kvernberget. This is the largest of the islands that make up the city of Kristiansund (the others being Kirkelandet, Innlandet, and Skorpa). Norwegian National Road 70 connects the island to the city of Kristiansund and south to the mainland. Kirkelandet
Kirklandet or Gomalandet is an island in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island is split in two by the ''Vågen'' inlet, with the western half called ''Kirklandet'' and the eastern half called ''Gomalandet''. The name of the island means "church land", since it has been the historic site of a church. Today, Kirkelandet Church is located on the western part of the island. This is the main island of the city of Kristiansund, with the island of Innlandet to the southwest, the island of Nordlandet to the southeast, and the island of Skorpa to the east. The village lies on the southeast side of the island of Frei, along the Freifjorden, about southeast of the town of Kristiansund. Nedre Frei is a village in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal County, Norway. The village is located along the Freifjorden on the southern part of the island of Frei. The village sits about south of the village of Rensvik, about southwest of the village of Kvalvåg, and about southeast of the village of Storbakken.
