Winfried Kretschmann (born 17 May 1948) is a German politician serving as Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg since 2011. A member of the Alliance '90/Greens, he was President of the Bundesrat and ''ex officio'' deputy to the President of Germany from 2012 to 2013. He is the first member of the Greens to serve in these offices. Identifying himself as a green conservative, Kretschmann has been associated with both culturally and economically liberal policies. Kretschmann has been a member of the state parliament, the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg, since 1980, in the constituency of Nürtingen. Erich Justus Kretschmann (14 July 1887 – 1973) was a German physicist. (Gebhardt gives a list of Kretschmann's publications.) Life Kretschmann was born in Berlin. He obtained his PhD at Berlin University in 1914 with his dissertation entitled "''Eine Theorie der Schwerkraft im Rahmen der ursprünglichen Einsteinschen Relativitätstheorie''" (A theory of gravity in the framework of the original Einstein theory of relativity). His advisors were Max Planck and Heinrich Rubens. After working as a Gymnasium (school) teacher, he became Privatdozent for theoretical physics at the University of Königsberg in 1920, where he eventually became professor extraordinarius in 1926. From 1946 until 1952, Kretschmann was professor for theoretical physics and director of the institute for theoretical physics at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. Charlotte Kretschmann (3 December 1909 – 27 August 2024) was a German supercentenarian who was Germany's oldest-ever resident. Biography Kretschmann was born in Breslau, Kingdom of Prussia, on 3 December 1909. In addition to her parents and older brother she also had grandparents who lived on a farm in Pomerania. In her childhood she did gymnastics, and, as she remarked later, "got everything she wanted from her parents". Kretschmann also said in an interview that she wanted to do what her older brother "was allowed to do" (namely sports). She thus ran 800 metres as a "discipline" which earned her a gold pin from the sports authorities. At the age of 27, Kretschmann met her husband Werner during a dance at a sporting event (c. 1936).
