The national flag of Togo consists of five horizontal stripes, alternating between green and yellow, with a red square bearing a five-pointed white star in the Canton (flag), canton. Togolese artist Paul Ahyi designed the flag in 1960, just before its adoption on 27 April of that year, coinciding with Togo's proclamation of independence. Togo, officially the Togolese Republic, is a country in West Africa. Regions () are the first-level administrative divisions of Togo. They are subdivided into prefectures, which can be further broken down into communes. Each region has an elected regional government and a capital city that acts as its administrative seat. The regional governments have jurisdiction over some local affairs, but most powers are shared with the national government. Overview Togo has five regions subdivided into 39 prefectures, which are in turn subdivided into 117 communes. The regions are, from north to south, Savanes, Kara, Centrale, Plateaux and Maritime. Kara Region () is one of Togo's five regions. Kara is the regional capital. Other major cities in the Kara region include Bafilo, Bassar, Kpagouda and Niamtougou.
