Japanese Gunboat Kotaka
was a river gunboat of the Imperial Japanese Navy, part of the 11th Gunboat Sentai, that operated on the Yangtze River in China during the 1930s, and during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During World War II, the vessel was in use as a passenger ship and communications ship. The vessel was sunk on May 31, 1944. Construction and career The gunboat participated in the Battle of Wuhan from June to September 1938 and in Battle of Madang and the Battle of Jiujiang in June 1938. From February to May 1939, ''Kotaka'' fought in the Nanchang Campaign. In 1942 ''Kotaka'' was in service as a passenger ship. The vessel was sunk on May 31, 1944, on the Yangtze River while serving as a communications ship. The IJN official designation was . Japanese Torpedo Boat Kotaka
was a torpedo boat of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was ordered in 1885 from the shipbuilder Yarrows in London, Great Britain, where she was built in parts along Japanese specifications, and then assembled in Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, Japan. She participated in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). She was decommissioned on 1 April 1908, to become a training ship. She was retired on 1 March 1916, but again reactivated in 1917, ending her career in January 1927. Design and construction An order for what became ''Kotaka'' was initially planned in 1881, but was delayed by funding issues which also affected completion of Japan's first torpedo boats (the 40 ton ''TB-1''-class), and a final order was not placed with the British shipbuilders Yarrows until 29 April 1885. Kotaka Otsuma
was born on June 21, 1884 in Kawashiri, Kōzan Town, Sera County, Hiroshima Prefecture, the third daughter of . After studying at Kawashiri Elementary School, Hongo Middle School, and the Kozan Needlecraft School, she found employment at a local elementary school. In 1901 she moved to Tokyo and enrolled in Wayo Women's University, subsequently taking a teaching position in Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1907 she married , an employee of the Imperial Household Ministry. With his help and support, she founded a needlecraft school in Chiyoda, Tokyo, a stone's throw from the Imperial Palace (Kokyo). This school later developed into the Otsuma Girls' Middle and High Schools and Otsuma Women's University and Junior College. In 1952 she founded the Kozan Art and Craft High School and remained its head until her death. Otsuma died on January 3, 1970.
